Community Honors Martin Luther King Jr. at 17th Annual Prayer Breakfast
A gathering in Crystal Lake on January 15, 2024, brought together dozens of participants to honor the legacy of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. during the 17th annual prayer breakfast hosted by FaithBridge, an organization dedicated to fostering interfaith dialogue. The event, themed “Can You Feel a Brand New Day?”, featured speakers from diverse religious traditions, including Islam, Judaism, Christianity, Buddhism, and Indigenous cultures, who shared prayers and reflections on King’s impact as well as connections to contemporary issues.
Jon Nilson from the St. Anne Catholic Community in Barrington emphasized King’s profound influence and the need for continued awareness of his message. He recalled a visit from the late Pope Francis to the United States in 2015, during which the pontiff spoke about the role of religion in societal development. Nilson noted that Pope Francis highlighted a vision of politics aimed at achieving the common good, mentioning figures such as Abraham Lincoln, Dorothy Day, Thomas Merton, and King as sources of inspiration.
Nilson expressed concern that King’s message is often simplified to a call for civility rather than recognizing his advocacy for economic and racial justice. He stated, “You understood that he was truly a prophet,” adding that the consequences of ignoring King’s teachings are evident in today’s societal challenges.
The event featured musical performances by singer Darlene Benton, who performed “If I Can Help Somebody” and “If I Can Dream.” Benton shared that “If I Can Help Somebody” was among King’s favorite songs, which he had heard while preaching at Ebenezer Baptist Church in 1956. She explained that King was so inspired by the song that he had it recorded for personal reflection during his travels. “If I Can Dream,” which was popularized by Elvis Presley in 1968, also holds historical significance as it resonated deeply during the turbulent times following King’s assassination.
The keynote speaker, Rev. Norval I. Brown, pastor at Cary United Methodist Church and Community United Methodist Church of Fox River Grove, focused on the significance of the day for children, particularly Black and Brown children. He referenced Ruby Bridges, who, as a young girl, became the first African American student to attend the all-white William Frantz Elementary School in New Orleans, escorted by federal marshals for her safety.
Brown poignantly addressed contemporary issues, stating, “This day is for Black and Brown children who walk to school today on streets lined by ICE agents seeking to arrest and detain their parents.” He also honored the memories of Emmett Till and other individuals, such as Michael Brown and Laquan McDonald, who lost their lives due to systemic racism and police violence.
Highlighting the persistence of white privilege in various societal realms, Brown criticized recent educational policies in states like Florida that attempt to minimize the historical significance of slavery. He pointed out that teachers are now required to instruct students that enslaved individuals “developed skills which, in some instances, could be applied for their personal benefit,” as reported by the Associated Press in 2023. Brown asserted that the horrors of slavery, including the denial of education and basic rights, must not be downplayed in historical discussions.
In closing, Brown urged the audience to confront the realities of history without glossing over the painful truths. He stated, “We must balance the desire to coat history with a honey view of what has gone on in the past, while declining to use the disinfectant of truth to clean our viewing screen.” This call to action resonated with attendees, reinforcing the importance of remembering and honoring Martin Luther King Jr.’s enduring legacy in the ongoing fight for justice and equality.
