Kingston’s Supportive Housing Program Aims to Combat Homelessness

Residents of Kingston’s new supportive housing program are set to receive essential resources aimed at aiding their transition out of homelessness. The city council has converted three suburban homes into supportive housing residences, specifically designed to assist individuals in need. Two of these homes, located on Braemar Road and Palmerston Crescent, will be managed by Ryandale Transitional Housing, an organization known for its successful track record in similar initiatives.

Earlier this month, a group of concerned neighbors from 1056 Palmerston Crescent urged the city council to reconsider the planned conversion of the property into supportive housing. They expressed apprehensions regarding safety and the distance from essential services required by residents. Despite these concerns, the council voted in favor of the supportive housing initiative.

Tim Barber, the chair of the board for Ryandale, has addressed these fears, asserting that they are largely unfounded. He emphasized that Ryandale operates similar facilities on Victoria Street, Fieldstone Drive, and at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church with minimal issues. “The people living at the locations are on their way to getting out of homelessness and are governed by rules they have to follow to stay in the program,” Barber stated.

Screening Process and Support
Barber explained in an interview that Ryandale employs a rigorous screening process to ensure that new residents are committed to their recovery and transition. “We make sure that the people who are coming into our program are clean and sober, that they intend to remain that way, and that they are well suited for our program,” he said. This approach not only identifies individuals ready for change but also aims to foster a supportive community atmosphere.

The Palmerston Crescent location is expected to accommodate approximately eight males, while the Braemar Road residence will house a similar number of females. Barber clarified the organization’s intake methodology, stating, “Each potential resident is interviewed, and we have specific intake people who follow a specific guide to ensure that those entering our program genuinely wish to transition away from homelessness.”

Ongoing Assistance and Community Integration
Ryandale not only assists during the initial placement but continues to support residents even after they secure stable housing. Barber elaborated, “Once they’re placed, or once they find stable housing, we continue to meet with them afterward to ensure that they’re successful in that transition.” This dedication to ongoing support is a cornerstone of Ryandale’s mission.

The funding for Ryandale’s programs comes from various partners, including the city and the United Way of Kingston, Frontenac, Lennox and Addington. Barber stressed that the organization is accountable to these partners regarding client success. If a resident fails to adhere to the program’s requirements or disrupts the community, they may be reassigned to a different program.

“Our guests and residents want to make that transition, and the requirement of that is that they’re attending our programs, our education sessions, and being good residents and good citizens,” Barber stated. By instilling a sense of responsibility and community involvement, Ryandale aims to mitigate any potential issues that might arise in the neighborhoods surrounding its supportive housing.

The establishment of these supportive housing residences in Kingston represents a proactive approach to tackling homelessness, providing essential support and resources to those in need while addressing community concerns.
