Perimeter Aviation Honors Cathy Merrick with New Aircraft Dedication
Cathy Merrick, the late Grand Chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, was honored on March 20, 2024, with the dedication of a new Dash 8 aircraft by Perimeter Aviation. This tribute was made to recognize her significant contributions to advocating for First Nations access to essential services.
The aircraft, registered as C-GYCM, incorporates Merrick’s initials, with the “C” and “M” symbolizing her legacy. During the dedication ceremony, Joey Petrisor, president and CEO of Perimeter Aviation, emphasized the importance of the tribute. He stated, “Dedicating this aircraft is a meaningful way to honor her legacy and our shared commitment to ensuring communities are never left without access to vital services.”
Merrick’s influence extended beyond her role; she was known for her tireless efforts in supporting First Nations. A permanent display near the aircraft’s door features her spirit name written in Cree syllabics, serving as a lasting reminder of her dedication.
Community Reflections on Merrick’s Legacy
At the ceremony, Kyra Wilson, the current Grand Chief of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, spoke about Merrick’s impact on her community. “She carried so many roles in our communities and our nations,” Wilson remarked. “She worked tirelessly every single day for people.” Wilson described Merrick as a mentor, noting her gentle and calming presence.
“She helped so many people through tough times, and this dedication on the aircraft is a way to acknowledge and remember the great work she did as our Grand Chief,” Wilson added. This sentiment was echoed by many who gathered to celebrate Merrick’s contributions, underscoring the profound loss felt by those who knew her.
Cathy Merrick passed away suddenly at the age of 63 on September 6, 2024, after collapsing outside the Winnipeg law courts. Following her death, hundreds gathered at the courthouse for a candlelight vigil in her memory, illustrating the deep respect and admiration she garnered throughout her life. Her body lay in state at the Manitoba legislature, allowing the community to pay their respects.
The dedication of the Dash 8 aircraft stands as a testament to her enduring legacy. Perimeter Aviation’s tribute not only honors Merrick’s contributions but also reinforces the ongoing commitment to ensuring that First Nations have access to essential services, a cause she championed throughout her career. The aircraft will serve as a reminder of her dedication and the continued work needed to support Indigenous communities across Canada.
