A resident of Langley has been awarded the Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers, Canada’s highest honour for volunteer service. This recognition celebrates Canadians who have made significant, sustained, and unpaid contributions to their communities, both locally and internationally.

In a ceremony attended by family and friends, Nathan Pachal, the Mayor of Langley City, presented the medal on behalf of the Governor General of Canada. Cheung expressed his surprise and gratitude, stating, “I was really quite surprised, honoured and humbled to receive this prestigious award.”

Cheung has a long-standing commitment to volunteering, having dedicated over two decades to various local and regional organizations. His work has contributed to numerous initiatives, including newcomer settlement, affordable housing, seniors’ care, and youth sports.

Commitment to Community Service

Cheung has served in several key roles, including as a director with S.U.C.C.E.S.S. from 2012 to 2018, where he advanced programs for newcomers and seniors across British Columbia and other regions. Since 2022, he has held the position of finance chair for the BC Games Society, overseeing strategic and financial planning for both the Winter and Summer Games.

His extensive involvement with sports organizations includes serving as vice-president of the BC Summer Swimming Association, where he developed a strategic plan and managed member discipline. Cheung also officiates at provincial and national swim events, and volunteers in various sports, such as athletics, gymnastics, canoeing, kayaking, and volleyball.

Reflecting on his volunteer journey, Cheung noted that his parents’ experiences with S.U.C.C.E.S.S. upon immigrating to Canada, as well as his children’s participation in competitive sports, inspired him to give back. He stated, “I think of how much I’ve gained from my community, and that inspires me to give back.”

Vision for the Future

Cheung envisions a support network to make organized sports more accessible to children who lack the financial resources to participate. He believes that the benefits of sports for young people can be tremendous, despite the high costs associated with organized activities.

He aims to collaborate with public and private organizations to create a financial system that assists children in overcoming barriers to entry in sports. His strategy includes partnering with sports clubs to secure funding and matching volunteers with children to transport them to practices and competitions.

“The impacts would be multi-generational,” Cheung remarked. “These positive experiences will encourage them to make good decisions for their futures.”

Earlier this year, Cheung also received the King Charles III Coronation Medal for his community service and volunteerism. He encourages others to engage in volunteer work, emphasizing its importance in fostering a compassionate community.

“People have busy lives, and it is very challenging to find time to volunteer, but volunteerism is the backbone of a thriving and compassionate community,” he said. “So just jump in and volunteer as much as you can, and it will be extremely rewarding.”

Cheung’s dedication to volunteering continues to inspire many in Langley and beyond, illustrating the profound impact one individual can have on their community.
