Langley’s Cheung Honoured with Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers
A dedicated volunteer from Langley, British Columbia, has been awarded the prestigious Sovereign’s Medal for Volunteers, Canada’s highest honour for volunteer service. This accolade recognizes Canadians who have made significant and sustained unpaid contributions to their communities, both locally and internationally.
Francis Cheung, who has served as Langley City’s chief administrative officer, expressed his surprise and gratitude upon receiving the medal. “I was really quite surprised, honoured and humbled to receive this prestigious award,” Cheung remarked. He highlighted the collective efforts of his fellow volunteers, stating, “I immediately thought about all of these people who also deserve this medal. Their generosity and selflessness inspire me and many others.”
The ceremony took place in Langley City, where Nathan Pachal, the Mayor of Langley, presented the medal on behalf of the Governor General of Canada. Cheung’s family and friends attended the event, marking a significant moment in his extensive volunteer career.
Cheung’s involvement in various organizations spans over two decades, during which he has dedicated hundreds of hours to groups such as S.U.C.C.E.S.S., the BC Games Society, and the BC Summer Swimming Association. His volunteer efforts have focused on supporting newcomer settlement, affordable housing, seniors’ care, and youth sports, all of which strengthen community bonds and encourage participation throughout the province.
Impact on the Community
From 2012 to 2018, Cheung served as a director with S.U.C.C.E.S.S., where he played a key role in advancing programs for newcomers and seniors across British Columbia, Toronto, and international offices in Asia. Since 2022, he has been the finance chair for the BC Games Society, overseeing strategic and financial planning for the BC Winter and Summer Games. Additionally, he has held the position of vice-president of the BC Summer Swimming Association, where he developed a strategic plan and managed member discipline.
Beyond his contributions to sports, Cheung has also raised service dogs for the Pacific Assistance Dogs Society and volunteered with Operation Red Nose, ensuring safe rides for community members during the holiday season.
Cheung aims to create a more accessible environment for youth sports. He noted, “The benefits of sport for young people can be tremendous. And yet, we know that there is a very high cost to organized sport, and there are many children who don’t have the opportunity or resources to participate.” His vision involves collaborating with public and private organizations to establish a support network and financial system to assist underprivileged children in accessing sports.
He emphasized the importance of community involvement, stating, “When everyone gives a little, a lot can be achieved.” Cheung’s approach focuses on securing necessary funding and matching volunteers with children to facilitate their participation in practices and competitions.
Encouraging Volunteerism
In addition to the Sovereign’s Medal, Cheung received the King Charles III Coronation Medal earlier this year for his relentless commitment to community service. He encourages others to engage in volunteer work, acknowledging the challenges posed by busy lifestyles. “Volunteerism is the backbone of a thriving and compassionate community,” he stated. “So just jump in and volunteer as much as you can, and it will be extremely rewarding.”
Cheung’s journey exemplifies the profound impact of volunteerism, showcasing how dedicated individuals can inspire positive change and foster a sense of community. His story serves as a reminder of the importance of giving back and nurturing the values of integrity, empathy, and perseverance in future generations.
