Nathan Rourke Signs Extension with B.C. Lions Through 2028

Nathan Rourke has signed a contract extension with the B.C. Lions that will keep him with the team through the 2028 season. The decision comes as the 27-year-old quarterback aims to build on his impressive performance and the momentum generated by the team in recent seasons.

Rourke expressed his enthusiasm for continuing his journey with the Lions, stating, “In professional sports, any type of stability is hard to come by, so you jump at opportunities like this.” He emphasized his desire to compete for the Grey Cup each year with the organization, highlighting the importance of consistency in professional football.

Under the new agreement announced on Tuesday, Rourke is eager to return for a second season under head coach Buck Pierce, who joined the Lions last year as the offensive coordinator. Rourke believes the team is on the verge of significant success, saying, “I think we certainly have built a lot of momentum last year and there’s certainly more buzz than there was last year.”

Last season, Rourke achieved career milestones, including 5,290 passing yards, 31 touchdown passes, and 564 rushing yards, earning him recognition as the CFL’s outstanding player and top Canadian. The Lions finished the season with an 11-7 record, reaching the division final before a narrow defeat to the eventual Grey Cup champions, the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

Contract Details and Future Aspirations

While specific financial terms of the contract were not disclosed, Neil McEvoy, the Lions’ vice-president of football operations, acknowledged Rourke as a premier player who commands significant compensation. “We live in a salary cap world, and we were able to make things work for both parties,” McEvoy remarked.

Rourke hinted that he may have accepted a slightly lower salary for the security of a longer contract, allowing the Lions to retain other key players. “Ultimately, I want to win championships,” he stated, indicating a team-first mentality.

As he enters his fifth season with the Lions, Rourke feels increasingly comfortable in his role, expressing confidence in his growth as a player. “I think there’s room to improve and that’s very exciting for me mentally,” he noted. A primary focus for Rourke this season will be reducing his interceptions, which totaled 16 last year, tying him for the most in the CFL alongside Winnipeg’s Zach Collaros.

Looking ahead, Rourke aims to keep his interceptions in single digits, acknowledging that while mistakes will happen, he intends to minimize errors that could jeopardize the team’s performance. “I’m going to do whatever I can do in my control and not turn the ball over,” he asserted.

Rourke was drafted by the Lions in the second round of the 2020 CFL draft and has since established himself as a key player, boasting a record of 23-13 as a starter. After a brief stint in the NFL with teams such as the Jacksonville Jaguars and the New England Patriots, he returned to B.C. in August 2024 and has been a valuable asset ever since.

Reflecting on his experiences, Rourke expressed satisfaction with the direction of his career in the CFL. He stated, “I feel like this organization has given me the best opportunity as a player to improve year after year.” With his new contract in place, Rourke is poised to enhance his skills and contribute to the Lions’ aspirations over the coming seasons.
