Nova Scotia Launches Skills Bridge Program for Veterans in Construction

The government of Nova Scotia has introduced a new program aimed at assisting military veterans, reservists, and their families transition into careers within the construction industry. The initiative, named Skills Bridge, was announced on March 15, 2024, and is set to support up to 100 individuals over the next three years.

Delivered in partnership with the non-profit organization Helmets to Hardhats, the Skills Bridge program will offer comprehensive training, coaching, and direct pathways to apprenticeship and employment opportunities within the province’s construction sector. The initiative is designed to leverage the skills and discipline that veterans have gained during their service.

Program Details and Objectives

One key aspect of the Skills Bridge initiative will focus on classroom and leadership training, conducted in collaboration with the Nova Scotia Construction Sector Council. This component aims to equip participants with essential skills tailored to the construction industry. Another stream will facilitate direct referrals and apprenticeship placements, ensuring a smoother transition into the workforce.

Nolan Young, Nova Scotia’s Minister of Labour, Skills and Immigration, emphasized the value that veterans bring to the workforce in a statement. He remarked, “Nova Scotians who have served their country bring discipline, leadership, and teamwork to everything they do. This program not only helps veterans find meaningful new careers, it also strengthens our workforce and helps address labour and skills shortages in construction.”

The total budget for the Skills Bridge program is set at $480,000 over a three-year period. This funding will support the development of training modules and the operational costs associated with connecting veterans to potential employers in the construction sector.
