B.C. Agriculture Embraces Tech with $2.5M Funding Boost
The introduction of advanced technology in British Columbia’s agricultural sector is transforming operations for farms in the Fraser Valley. The B.C. On-Farm Technology Adoption Program has opened its application intake, allowing farmers to apply for financial support until April 6, 2026. This initiative is designed to facilitate the adoption of innovative technologies that enhance productivity and reduce manual labor for operations such as Northland Farms in Chilliwack and QuikFarm in Abbotsford.
The current funding round, totaling $2.5 million, is part of the Sustainable Canadian Agricultural Partnership. This cost-shared program aims to bolster the competitiveness of B.C. farms by investing in automation, robotics, artificial intelligence, and advanced farm management software.
Jordan Voorhorst, farm manager at Northland Farms, expressed his enthusiasm for the impact of technology on their operations. In a recent government news release, he stated, “At Northland Farms, we believe the future of food is local, fresh all year round.” The farm has previously benefited from the program, utilizing funds to invest in an automated radish harvester. This equipment streamlines the harvesting process by pulling radishes from the soil, trimming tops, and packaging them, effectively reducing manual labor.
According to Voorhorst, the adoption of such technology marks a significant shift in agricultural practices. “By moving beyond costly and repetitive hand-harvesting, the state-of-the-art technology supported by this program is ushering in a new era of agricultural innovation for our farm and the sector,” he added.
The funding not only supports existing operations but also addresses ongoing labor challenges faced by farmers. Amanda Li, of QuikFarm, highlighted the transformative nature of their new machinery. “This machine completely changed the traditional way of plant propagation. It saved more than 10,000 hours of labor and opened new sales opportunities for our farm,” she noted.
The B.C. government emphasizes the importance of this program in helping farmers adopt technologies tailored to their unique challenges. Heath MacDonald, the federal Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, stated, “This program is helping farmers in British Columbia adopt new technologies that directly address the unique challenges they are facing.” He further explained that by ensuring access to innovative solutions, governments are enabling farmers to remain competitive and efficient.
The B.C. Minister of Agriculture and Food, Lana Popham, echoed these sentiments, stating that the program fosters innovation in agritech, allowing farmers to operate more efficiently and bolster local food systems.
Eligible farmers can use the funding to procure a variety of technologies, including autonomous robotic arms for packing and stacking, machines for precise planting, and automated harvesters for crop gathering. Since its inception in 2023, the On-Farm Technology Adoption Program has allocated $6.4 million to support 134 farm projects across the province.
The current application window is open until April 6, 2026, providing a crucial opportunity for B.C. farmers to embrace technological advancements that promise to reshape the agricultural landscape. As farms continue to adapt to modern challenges, the integration of such technologies will be pivotal in enhancing productivity and sustainability in the sector.
