Canadian Astronaut Jeremy Hansen to Explore Moon’s Far Side
Canadian astronaut Jeremy Hansen is set to embark on a historic mission aboard Artemis 2, which will take him beyond the moon for a rare opportunity to observe the moon’s far side. This side remains unseen from Earth and presents unique scientific possibilities. As Hansen engages in this unprecedented venture, scientists on the ground will be closely monitoring the findings, as they plan to deploy telescopes and robotic instruments on the lunar surface in the future.
The moon is tidally locked to Earth, meaning one hemisphere is perpetually facing our planet while the other is directed outward into space. Although the far side is frequently referred to as the “dark side,” it receives equal sunlight compared to the near side. The far side features a rugged, cratered landscape, starkly different from the flat plains known as Maria visible from Earth. Its isolation from terrestrial radio interference makes it an ideal site for astronomical observations.
During the flyby, Hansen and his fellow crew members will be observing the lunar surface from a vantage point of approximately 7,500 kilometers beyond the moon. This altitude allows for a broader perspective, offering views of both the far side of the moon and the Earth simultaneously—an experience not seen by humans since the Apollo missions. Early Apollo astronauts orbited much closer to the surface and primarily observed equatorial regions.
Scientific Missions to the Far Side
The Artemis crew’s observations are vital for understanding the lunar surface’s conditions, which could impact future landings. Subtle differences in color and texture can indicate varying ground conditions, including dust levels and surface roughness.
Among the planned missions to the far side is the TSUKUYOMI, or Lunar Meter Wave Telescope, developed by Japanese researchers. This project aims to establish a network of radio dishes on the moon, targeting signals from the universe’s dark ages, a period around 400,000 years after the Big Bang when the cosmos was filled primarily with neutral hydrogen gas. These faint radio signals are expected to provide insights into the early universe and the formation of structures such as stars and galaxies.
The first TSUKUYOMI prototype is scheduled to land near the moon’s south pole between March 2027 and 2028. This initial deployment will be complemented by additional antennas aimed at the far side throughout the 2030s. Other robotic observatories, including LuSEE Night from the University of Boulder Colorado, which is set to launch this year, and NASA’s Farside Seismic Suite, planned for 2027, will enhance research capabilities on the moon.
Future of Lunar Exploration
While human missions to the moon will focus on establishing a sustainable colony and locating water ice at the south pole, the far side will host a multitude of robotic missions quietly gathering data on the universe’s origins. These explorations aim to unravel mysteries about dark matter and the evolution of the cosmos.
The scientific community is eager to leverage these advancements in lunar exploration. Upcoming missions from both NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA) are currently in the developmental stages, further expanding humanity’s reach into space and enhancing our understanding of the universe.
Hansen’s journey represents a significant step forward in lunar exploration and offers a compelling glimpse into the future of space research. As he prepares for this mission, the insights gleaned from the moon’s far side are poised to reshape our understanding of cosmic history.
