Animal advocacy has taken a personal turn for Nives Ilic, an activist from Ottawa, who recently adopted a former laboratory dog named Mack. Mack’s journey from a life of confinement and experimentation to one of love and companionship highlights the ongoing issue of animal testing and the need for reform.

From Laboratory to Loving Home

Mack spent the first six years of his life in a laboratory, where he experienced unimaginable trauma. Ilic, who had long been involved in animal advocacy, thought she understood the implications of animal testing until she brought Mack home. The first night they spent together, she stayed still, afraid to wake him, as he nestled close to her, trembling in fear that he might be taken away again.

Last year, Ilic became actively involved in a campaign led by Animal Justice after whistleblowers revealed cruel experiments on dogs at St. Joseph’s Hospital in London, Ontario. Reports indicated that dogs were subjected to heart attacks for research purposes. The public outcry led to the closure of the hospital’s dog lab in August 2025, showcasing the power of community action.

In light of these revelations, Ilic sought to foster dogs rescued from laboratories. After being approved by The Beagle Alliance, she traveled to London to adopt Mack, along with nine other dogs released from another research facility. Due to confidentiality agreements, she remains unaware of the specific tests Mack endured.

Life with Mack: A Journey of Discovery

Upon bringing Mack home, Ilic quickly realized the extent of his trauma. During the car ride, he trembled in his crate, and his fear became apparent when they encountered the building’s elevator, which caused him to shake uncontrollably. It was evident that Mack had not been potty trained or exposed to the outside world.

Initially, Ilic feared that she would be dealing with an aggressive dog. Instead, she found a creature yearning for love. Despite his past, Mack was eager for affection, following Ilic from room to room and exhibiting curiosity toward other animals and people. His gentle nature was a stark contrast to the harsh environment he had known.

As Mack settled into his new life, Ilic observed significant milestones in his development. The small joys, such as feeling sunlight for the first time, marked monumental achievements for both of them. Each moment reminded her of the resilience of animals and the importance of advocating for those who suffer in silence. According to statistics, more than 3.7 million animals were used in research in Canada in 2024, a staggering figure that underscores the issue at hand.

Ilic’s experience caring for Mack has deepened her understanding of animal suffering. While statistics can be overwhelming, the personal connection with Mack transformed her perspective. She acknowledges the fragility of these animals and the significant impacts of their suffering.

Reflecting on her journey, Ilic expresses gratitude for the lessons Mack has taught her. He has served as a poignant reminder of the need for change in how society treats animals, particularly those used in research. She emphasizes that every animal saved represents a unique story and a chance for a better life.

Today, Mack enjoys a new chapter, filled with love and comfort. He spends his days in a soft bed, playing with other dogs, and receiving the affection he had long been denied. Ilic remains hopeful that one day, no animal will suffer in the name of science, advocating tirelessly for their rights.

As Ilic continues her advocacy work, she carries Mack’s story with her, a testament to the resilience of animals and the profound impact of compassion. Her experience serves as a call to action for others to consider the lives of animals in laboratories and the urgent need for reform in animal testing practices.

For those interested in sharing personal stories that can raise awareness or encourage change, Ilic invites others to contribute, highlighting the power of narratives in driving understanding and empathy.
