Lethbridge Polytechnic Achieves Ninth Rank Among Canadian Research Colleges

Lethbridge Polytechnic has secured its position as one of Canada’s leading research colleges, achieving a notable ninth place in the latest rankings by Research Infosource Inc.. This ranking marks an improvement from its tenth position in 2024 and eleventh in 2023, highlighting the institution’s upward trajectory in applied research.

Dr. Kenny Corscadden, Vice-President of Academic and Research at Lethbridge Polytechnic, emphasized the significance of this recognition. He stated, “Being acknowledged for applied research among numerous Canadian institutions is a remarkable win for the polytechnic. Over the past three years, we have consistently demonstrated our ability to compete at the national level.” This achievement reflects the polytechnic’s commitment to providing valuable applied learning and research opportunities in various industry and community sectors.

Growth in Research Initiatives

Lethbridge Polytechnic’s journey in applied research began with the establishment of the Aquaculture Centre of Excellence in 1999. Since then, the Centre of Applied Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship (CARIE) has broadened its research scope, now encompassing five key areas: agriculture, food and environment; business and technology; health and wellness; justice and public safety; and social sciences and humanities.

In 2025, researchers at Lethbridge Polytechnic are collaborating with Dr. Chandra Singh, Results Driven Agriculture Research chair and director of the Advanced Post-harvest Technology Centre, to develop non-destructive crop testing methods. This partnership exemplifies the polytechnic’s active engagement in practical research that benefits local industries.

Additionally, the institution has excelled in various specific research categories. It ranked fourth in Artificial Intelligence (AI) Research Partnerships and Completed Research Projects. Lethbridge Polytechnic also placed second in Research Intensity Dollars per Researcher, with nearly $190,000, and third in College Research Income, totaling almost $9.5 million. Furthermore, the polytechnic secured ninth place in Research Partnerships.
