Lethbridge Polytechnic Achieves Top Ten Status in Research Colleges
Lethbridge Polytechnic has secured its place among Canada’s leading research colleges, ranking ninth in the latest report by Research Infosource. This marks an improvement from its previous ranking of tenth in 2023 and eleventh in 2022. The polytechnic’s commitment to applied research has been a significant factor in its rise, reflecting its ongoing dedication to innovation and education.
The journey of applied research at Lethbridge Polytechnic began in 1999 with the establishment of the Aquaculture Centre of Excellence. Over the years, the institution has broadened its research scope through the Centre of Applied Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, which now includes five key themes: agriculture, food and environment, business and technology, health and wellness, and justice and public safety.
Kenny Corscadden, Vice-President of Academic and Research at Lethbridge Polytechnic, expressed enthusiasm about the recognition, stating, “Being recognized for our applied research, when compared with so many other institutions across Canada, is a remarkable win for the polytechnic.” He highlighted the institution’s consistent performance at the national level over the past three years.
In addition to Corscadden’s remarks, Andrew Dunlop, Associate Vice-President of Research, emphasized the importance of applied research in addressing industry and community needs. “The heart of applied research is responsiveness to industry and community needs,” Dunlop noted. He further elaborated on the polytechnic’s strategy to diversify its research capabilities and establish strong relationships with stakeholders.
As Lethbridge Polytechnic transitions from its former identity as Lethbridge College, it aims to communicate its new brand effectively. Dunlop remarked on the significance of this shift, stating, “To get people used to the idea that it is a different kind of institution now. We serve a different mandate, and applied research is part of that.”
The high ranking serves as a testament to the institution’s capabilities, instilling confidence in students and researchers alike. Lethbridge Polytechnic is increasingly recognized as an institution of choice for individuals eager to make a meaningful impact in their fields.
The ongoing growth and development of Lethbridge Polytechnic position it as a significant player in Canadian higher education, particularly in the realm of applied research. With its strategic initiatives and commitment to collaboration, the polytechnic is well-equipped to meet the evolving demands of industry and society.
