Lethbridge Polytechnic has secured its position as one of Canada’s leading research colleges, ranking ninth in the latest report from Research Infosource. This marks a rise from its previous ranking of tenth last year and eleventh in 2023. The institution’s commitment to applied research began with the establishment of the Aquaculture Centre of Excellence in 1999 and has since expanded to include a diverse range of research themes.

The Centre of Applied Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Lethbridge Polytechnic now operates across five key areas: agriculture, food and environment, business and technology, health and wellness, and justice and public safety. This strategic diversification underscores the institution’s responsiveness to the needs of industry and community stakeholders.

“Being recognized for our applied research, when compared with so many other institutions across Canada, is a remarkable win for the polytechnic,” stated Kenny Corscadden, Vice-President of Academic and Research at Lethbridge Polytechnic. His comments were made in a press release issued on Thursday. Corscadden emphasized that the institution has consistently demonstrated its ability to compete at a national level over the past three years.

Lethbridge Polytechnic aims to provide robust applied learning and research opportunities, making it a preferred choice for students and researchers eager to make a meaningful impact. “The heart of applied research is responsiveness to industry and community needs,” said Andrew Dunlop, Associate Vice-President of Research. He highlighted the institution’s efforts to broaden its research capabilities and foster relationships with key stakeholders, which ultimately enhances its ability to address real-world challenges.

As the former Lethbridge College transitions into its new role as a polytechnic, Dunlop noted the importance of establishing a fresh identity. “To get people used to the idea that it is a different kind of institution now,” he explained. This shift aligns with the institution’s expanded mandate, where applied research plays a critical role.

The recognition from Research Infosource not only reinforces Lethbridge Polytechnic’s commitment to quality research but also instills confidence among partners and stakeholders about the institution’s expertise in this field. As it continues to grow and evolve, Lethbridge Polytechnic is positioning itself as a key player in Canada’s educational and research landscape, dedicated to delivering impactful solutions that benefit various sectors.
