Lethbridge Researcher Enhances Irrigation Efficiency with New Tools
A researcher at Lethbridge Polytechnic is developing innovative software tools aimed at improving irrigation practices for farmers in Southern Alberta. Michael Kehoe is leading a project that focuses on optimizing irrigation timing and water allocation, leveraging field sensor data and forecasting models to guide irrigators in making informed decisions.
The primary goal of this initiative is to provide producers with actionable insights regarding their water usage. Kehoe emphasizes that the software will not only present current conditions but also forecast potential outcomes over the coming days. This capability is increasingly important as the region faces hotter and drier summers, making precise water management critical for crop health and agricultural sustainability.
“Southern Alberta depends on irrigation,” Kehoe stated. “The economy here is not just the farmers and irrigators; it’s everyone—we all depend on that water, and this region would be a lot different without it.” His commitment to enhancing irrigation efficiency underscores the broader economic implications of water management in the area.
The project aims to assist farmers in determining optimal water allocations, which is essential for maximizing yields and conserving resources. Kehoe’s research includes a comparative analysis of irrigation systems, investigating the efficiency of overhead pivots versus subsurface drip irrigation systems. Preliminary findings indicate that while both systems result in similar crop water usage, the subsurface drip irrigation systems demonstrate greater efficiency. This insight could significantly influence future irrigation practices, encouraging farmers to adopt more effective methods.
