SaskPower Advances Nuclear Plans to Meet Saskatchewan’s Energy Needs
SaskPower has initiated a formal evaluation of large-scale nuclear technology for potential use in Saskatchewan, expanding its commitment to nuclear energy alongside its existing small modular reactor projects. The provincial government emphasizes that nuclear power is a safe, reliable energy source that emits no greenhouse gases, presenting a viable solution to meet the region’s increasing electricity demand in the coming years.
Jeremy Harrison, the minister responsible for SaskPower, outlined the province’s energy security strategy, which envisions a future incorporating both small and large reactors. These reactors will utilize uranium sourced from local supplies. “Together with expanded intertie capacity, nuclear power will make Saskatchewan an export powerhouse and safeguard Saskatchewan’s energy security far into the future,” Harrison stated.
Strategic Partnerships and Community Engagement
The president and CEO of SaskPower, Rupen Pandya, highlighted the importance of collaboration in this venture. He stated that the company will work closely with partners experienced in nuclear technology and engage with local businesses, communities, and First Nations as it assesses the feasibility of deploying large reactors. “Potentially bringing a large reactor online will take at least 15 to 20 years,” Pandya noted, underscoring the need to commence the evaluation process without delay.
The provincial government has acknowledged that significant regulatory, siting, and community engagement efforts must be undertaken before any construction can begin on nuclear projects. In tandem with these developments, SaskPower is proceeding with its small modular reactor initiative. The announcement of a site for Saskatchewan’s first small modular reactor in the Estevan area is anticipated later in 2026.
Government Funding for Nuclear Initiatives
In a recent joint announcement, the provincial and federal governments revealed funding for the University of Regina to establish a licensing and testing centre for small modular reactors. The province will contribute $4 million through SaskPower, while the Government of Canada is allocating $1.96 million via PrairiesCan. Additionally, Innovation Saskatchewan is providing $1 million to support this project, which signifies a robust commitment to advancing nuclear technology in the region.
With these initiatives, Saskatchewan aims to secure its energy future while also contributing to broader efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the adoption of nuclear power. As the evaluation process moves forward, the province looks to position itself as a leader in sustainable energy solutions, balancing economic growth with environmental responsibility.
