Murray-Boyles Shines as Raptors Defeat Hawks 118-100
In a standout performance during his rookie season, Collin Murray-Boyles led the Toronto Raptors to a decisive 118-100 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on January 6, 2026. Filling in for the injured Jakob Poeltl, who is sidelined with a sore lower back, Murray-Boyles recorded 17 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists, showcasing his growing impact on the team.
Adapting to New Roles
Murray-Boyles also contributed defensively with three steals and two blocks, earning a plus-24 defensive rating. The six-foot-seven forward, who was selected ninth overall by the Raptors in the 2025 NBA Draft, has had to adapt quickly to playing center, a position he is not accustomed to, after primarily playing power forward for the South Carolina Gamecocks.
“If you’re not tired, you’re not going hard enough, so I try to be as tired as possible,” Murray-Boyles said, reflecting on his work ethic. His performance has shown that he is willing to take on the challenge while Poeltl recovers.
Darko Rajakovic, head coach of the Raptors, confirmed before the game that Poeltl had been cleared for contact, indicating a potential return in the near future. Rajakovic praised Murray-Boyles for his impressive development and ability to seize opportunities, highlighting the importance of not limiting players to preconceived roles.
Building Chemistry on Defense
Murray-Boyles has formed a strong defensive partnership with teammate Scottie Barnes. Both players, noted for their physicality and defensive prowess, have effectively collaborated on the court. “We’re both around the same size, we’re both physical, we both guard really well,” Barnes said, acknowledging the synergy they share when defending against opponents.
As a young player, Murray-Boyles looks to Barnes for inspiration. “He brings energy. He’s probably the best defensive player based on just his versatility and his effort,” he remarked, emphasizing the impact Barnes has had on his development as a rookie.
Heading into their next matchup against the Charlotte Hornets, the Raptors, now with a record of 22-15, hope to extend their two-game winning streak. Murray-Boyles’ performance not only highlights his potential but also signifies a promising future for the Raptors as they navigate the challenges of the season.
