In a standout performance during his rookie season, Collin Murray-Boyles led the Toronto Raptors to a decisive 118-100 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on January 6, 2026. Filling in for the injured Jakob Poeltl, who is sidelined with a sore lower back, Murray-Boyles contributed significantly with 17 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. His impact extended to the defensive end, where he recorded three steals and two blocks, achieving a plus-24 defensive rating.

Murray-Boyles, who stands at six-foot-seven, has adopted a straightforward philosophy this season: hard work is key. “If you’re not tired, you’re not going hard enough, so I try to be as tired as possible,” he remarked, showcasing his commitment to the game.

Rookie Steps Up in Poeltl’s Absence

Before the game, Raptors head coach Darko Rajakovic confirmed that Poeltl had been cleared for contact but was not ready to return. This provided Murray-Boyles with the opportunity to start at center. The rookie, who was selected ninth overall by Toronto in the 2025 NBA Draft, has transitioned from playing power forward at the University of South Carolina to the center position in the NBA due to the Raptors’ current roster configuration.

Entering the game, Murray-Boyles was averaging 6.8 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 1.4 assists over 18.8 minutes per game. However, he has seen increased playing time recently, logging over 24 minutes in his last five outings as he gains the trust of Rajakovic.

Rajakovic expressed his admiration for Murray-Boyles’ development, stating, “A common mistake is when a player comes in, you already have an idea of what he has to be. Sometimes we as coaches just try to box them in. We’re constantly learning about Collin, what he can do, how he’s learning, how he is picking up on things. It’s really impressive, his development.”

Building Chemistry on Defense

Murray-Boyles has formed a strong partnership with teammate Scottie Barnes, contributing to the Raptors’ defensive strength. Barnes, who is an inch taller but lighter than Murray-Boyles, praised their compatibility on the court, stating, “We’re both around the same size, we’re both physical, we both guard really well.” The duo has excelled at switching defensive assignments based on the game plan.

Drawing inspiration from Barnes, the 20-year-old rookie noted, “He brings energy. He’s probably the best defensive player based on just his versatility and his effort. Just watching that, especially as a young guy, it just makes me want to imitate that and just be the best I can be.” Barnes won the NBA Rookie of the Year award in 2022, setting a high standard for his younger teammate.

With this victory, the Raptors improved their record to 22-15 and are on a two-game winning streak. They will look to maintain this momentum as they head to Charlotte for their next matchup.
