Poland Launches TOP200 NAWA to Attract Global Research Talent
The Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange (NAWA) has launched the TOP200 NAWA programme, aimed at attracting outstanding researchers from top global universities to Poland. This initiative seeks to enhance transnational scientific collaboration and strengthen the country’s research capacity, highlighting Poland as a premier destination for international researchers.
The TOP200 NAWA programme invites researchers affiliated with universities ranked in the top 200 of global academic rankings, such as the Shanghai Ranking, QS, and Times Higher Education (THE). The initiative aims to bolster the Polish innovation ecosystem and improve the country’s competitive edge in global research.
Programme Objectives and Support
The programme has several key objectives, including providing stable employment for foreign researchers, establishing predictable research conditions, and facilitating the formation of independent research teams. It also seeks to enhance the collaboration between academia and industry, accelerating the development of the Polish research ecosystem.
Researchers can apply for two distinct tracks within the programme:
– **Junior Fellow**: Aimed at early-stage researchers who have obtained their doctorate within the last seven years.
– **Senior Fellow**: Targeted at experienced researchers with a proven track record in leading research teams.
Participants will receive full-time employment contracts at Polish universities or research institutes, access to necessary research infrastructure, and comprehensive administrative support. The programme also offers assistance in adapting to the new environment and guidance on future grant applications.
The budget for this initiative is set at PLN 17 million, with applications opening until February 27, 2026. The recommended platform for identifying suitable academic supervisors or host institutions is available at www.researchinpoland.org.
Expanding Opportunities in Research
TOP200 NAWA welcomes applications from all fields of science and aims to strengthen connections with leading global research centres. By enhancing international recognition of Polish science, the programme will expand the capabilities of the Polish research ecosystem, fostering innovation and development.
Participants will benefit from secure employment, social benefits, and academic freedom. The programme also provides opportunities for project group members and host institutions to access international networks and career prospects while collaborating with talented researchers.
The initiative pays tribute to the legacy of Professor Rudolf Weigl, a renowned Polish biologist and physician known for developing the world’s first effective vaccine against typhus. Weigl, who was nominated for the Nobel Prize multiple times, was a pivotal figure in biology and immunology during his career.

This strategic initiative by NAWA is poised to enhance Poland’s profile in the global research landscape while contributing to the growth and innovation of its academic institutions.
