Minooka Welcomes Surf Internet to Boost Local Connectivity
The Village of Minooka has officially launched a new internet service option for its residents and businesses through a partnership with Surf Internet. A ceremonial groundbreaking was held on December 4 at Minooka Village Hall, marking the beginning of Surf Internet’s construction of fiber optic infrastructure in the area.
Although extreme cold weather forced the event indoors, community leaders and representatives from Surf Internet were present to celebrate the occasion. Surf Internet is recognized for its high-speed internet services, offering speeds of up to 8 gigabits per second and focusing on rural and underserved regions in Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. According to Tom Lekan, Regional Development Manager, this expansion aims to enhance connectivity options for the local community.
Founded in 1999 by Gene Crusie, Surf Internet employs over 300 people and serves more than 600 communities. The company is already operational in Coal City, located in Grundy County, and is now set to begin the installation of fiber optics in Minooka. Lekan explained that the method used for boring the fiber optics is the most effective way to provide high-speed internet, and residents can expect to see trucks working within the village’s rights-of-way.
Importantly, Surf Internet will not access private properties until residents place service orders. “Once Surf is done, you will be able to order fiber for your house at a reasonably low price,” Lekan stated. He also highlighted that this development will position Minooka as a “GIG city,” a designation that few towns achieve.
During the groundbreaking ceremony, key figures including Minooka Mayor Ric Offerman, Trustee Barry Thompson, Village Administrator Dan Duffy, and Public Works Director Ryan Anderson, alongside Surf’s Regional Market Manager Audrey Miller, participated in the festivities. Duffy expressed optimism about the expansion, noting that it would foster competition and provide greater choices for both residential and commercial customers in Minooka.
As Surf Internet begins its work, residents can look forward to improved connectivity that aligns with the demands of modern digital life. The partnership signifies a long-term investment in the village’s infrastructure, promising to enhance the quality of life for current and future residents.
