Cambridge Community Mourning After Child and Woman Killed in Accidents
The city of Cambridge is grappling with profound sadness following a tragic incident on Thursday that resulted in the death of a three-year-old girl and serious injuries to a 31-year-old woman. The accidents have left the community in mourning, as expressed by Mayor Jan Liggett, who stated the city “grieves today.” The collision occurred around 12:50 p.m. ET near a plaza on Cedar Street, where police responded to reports of pedestrians being struck.
Both victims were taken to a local hospital with severe injuries. The young girl tragically succumbed to her injuries, while the woman sustained serious but non-life-threatening wounds. The driver involved, a 75-year-old man from Cambridge, was unharmed in the incident.
Recent Tragedy Amplifies Community Grief
This incident is particularly painful for the community, following another fatal collision just three weeks earlier. On November 20, 2023, a 34-year-old woman, identified as Sthephanie Palao Eduardo de Amat y Leon, was killed while walking at the intersection of Langs Drive and Industrial Road. Family and friends have shared their grief online and have initiated a fundraising campaign to support her loved ones. Sthephanie was a married mother of two.
In connection with the earlier tragedy, a 75-year-old woman has been charged with careless driving causing death. These incidents highlight the urgent need for discussions about pedestrian safety in the area.
Community Responds to Loss
Mayor Liggett emphasized the impact of these events on the entire community. “The pain of families is unfathomable, particularly in a holiday season where family gatherings are a major part of the season. The loss of loved ones is even more marked,” she stated. In her message, she extended deepest condolences to the families affected, acknowledging the broader impact on first responders and bystanders who witnessed these tragic events.
As investigations into Thursday’s collision continue, police urge anyone who witnessed the incident or possesses dashcam or store surveillance footage to come forward and assist authorities. The community’s grieving period serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and the value of each life lost.
