Three suspects charged in connection with the death of restaurateur Sharif Rahman appeared in an Owen Sound courtroom on December 1, 2023. Each suspect was extradited from the United Kingdom just the day before. They faced the court separately, answering preliminary questions before being remanded back into custody.

The suspects include Robert Busby Evans, aged 47, and Barry Evans, aged 54, both charged as accessories after the fact, alongside Robert Evans Jr., aged 24, who faces a manslaughter charge. The charges, which remain untested in court, follow an incident that took place on August 17, 2023, during a dispute over a bill at Rahman’s restaurant, The Curry House. He succumbed to his injuries a week later at a hospital in London, Ontario, leaving behind a wife and children.

The violent nature of Rahman’s death has deeply affected the Owen Sound community, where he was well-regarded for his character and commitment to local causes. According to police reports, the dispute escalated into an assault that ultimately led to Rahman’s fatal injuries.

Following the incident, police indicated that the suspects fled Canada, prompting the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Owen Sound Police Service to collaborate with international partners for their arrest. Robert Evans Jr. and his father were apprehended in Edinburgh, Scotland, on July 30, 2024, while Barry Evans was arrested later, on October 29, 2024, in Dalkeith, Scotland.

During the recent court appearance, each suspect was represented by legal counsel via Zoom. The suspects will return to court for further proceedings, with Robert Evans Jr. scheduled for December 15, 2023. The court has imposed a publication ban regarding any evidence presented during the bail process, along with a prohibition on communication between the suspects and eleven specific individuals.

The courtroom was attended by a small group, including media representatives and local residents. One attendee, identified only as Ruth, expressed her desire to see the suspects following her connection to Rahman and his restaurant.

“I just wanted to see what they looked like,” she remarked. “We had dinner the night before Sharif was killed, and it was very sad.”

Ruth knew Rahman through various community activities, where he was known to go the extra mile for others. His dedication to community service included fundraising efforts for the Canadian Foodgrains Bank.

The allegations against the suspects include claims that Robert Evans Jr. struck Rahman outside the restaurant after he had dined there with his brother and uncle. It is alleged that Barry Evans assisted his nephew by driving him away from the scene following the assault. Reports indicate that Robert Busby Evans later facilitated his son’s escape from Canada by booking a flight for him and driving him to the airport.

The ongoing legal proceedings are closely followed by the community, with many hoping for justice in the case that has left a lasting impact on local residents. As the legal process unfolds, the coming court dates will be crucial for all involved.
