Dufferin OPP Urges Safe Snow Fort Building Away from Roads
The Dufferin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is issuing a safety reminder to residents regarding the construction of snow forts. While this winter activity remains a popular pastime, the OPP emphasizes that proper precautions are essential to avoid dangerous situations. Recent heavy snowfall has resulted in large snowbanks, which can seem appealing for building, but pose significant risks when located near roadways and driveways.
Building snow structures in close proximity to traffic can create life-threatening scenarios. Snowplows and passing vehicles are capable of shifting or collapsing snowbanks unexpectedly, potentially hiding children from the view of drivers. Each winter, emergency crews respond to incidents involving snow forts constructed too close to roads, highlighting the need for awareness around this issue.
Municipalities throughout Ontario are encouraged to promote safe building locations and to remind families to select appropriate areas for winter activities, away from traffic hazards. Recommended safer spots include backyards, parks, or designated play areas where children can enjoy the winter season without the risks associated with roadside play.
In a community-focused effort, the Dufferin OPP calls on residents to collaborate in maintaining a safe winter environment. By choosing safer locations for snow play, families can enhance their enjoyment of the season while minimizing the potential for accidents.
The Dufferin OPP remains dedicated to public safety through proactive policing and appreciates the ongoing support of the community in keeping neighborhoods safe. By making informed choices, families can create memorable winter experiences without the worry of emergencies.
