Elevate Your Style: B.C. Stylist Unveils Men’s Fashion Tips for 2026
As the new year approaches, many individuals seek to refresh their wardrobes. Michael “Ozzie” Osbourne, a stylist and fashion educator based in Victoria, British Columbia, offers men practical tips to enhance their style in 2026. Drawing from his extensive experience living in Europe and traveling worldwide, Osbourne emphasizes the challenges faced by men in North America when it comes to stepping beyond traditional fashion boundaries.
Osbourne, who has worked as a stylist for over 15 years and teaches at Pacific Design Academy, believes that fashion is closely linked to culture and personal identity. He notes, “It’s really hard for men, I find, to be stylish – they don’t want to seem too feminine.” His mission is to help men find confidence and joy in self-expression through their clothing choices.
Building a Foundation: The Essential Wardrobe
The first step in developing a stylish appearance, according to Osbourne, is to focus on the basics. He recommends that every man should possess ten classic items, which include:
- A plain t-shirt
- Dark wash jeans
- Chinos
- A button-down shirt
- Chelsea or leather boots
- A crewneck sweater
- A blazer
- Classic sneakers
- Dress shoes
- A versatile jacket
Investing in high-quality basics may require a larger initial expenditure, but it pays off in the long run. Osbourne explains, “You buy a classic pair of good shoes, you know, $400, and that’s going to last you sometimes 10 years. It’s just worthwhile.”
Osbourne also emphasizes the importance of tailoring. He states, “I always have one big suggestion for everybody: use a tailor.” A tailored fit can transform inexpensive clothing into polished outfits. “A guy can buy a $2,000 suit, and it’s really expensive. I go buy a $200 suit at Value Village, but then I get it tailored and it fits me. That’s the secret.”
Understanding personal measurements and body types is essential for making informed clothing choices. Osbourne encourages men to learn their dimensions to shop effectively and confidently.
Experimenting with Style: From Basics to Bold
Once the foundational pieces are in place, Osbourne suggests that men begin to explore their style through colour, layering, and statement pieces. For those new to fashion experimentation, he recommends starting with a monochromatic look, which involves wearing one colour from head to toe. Progressing to tonal outfits that incorporate various shades of a single colour can also enhance visual appeal.
Osbourne states, “You can go all black from head to toe, and all of a sudden your kicks are pink. Or your hat is purple.” These small splashes of colour can significantly elevate an outfit. “Colour is really important. It can really make someone’s eyes pop.”
After mastering the basics and colour coordination, men can begin to layer and incorporate statement pieces characterized by unique patterns, shapes, or colours. These items can be sourced from thrift stores or high-end boutiques. “You just need one piece in the outfit that’s like an ‘oomph’,” he advises, highlighting the power of individual expression in style.
Osbourne also suggests introducing versatile items such as wool trousers, tailored overcoats, straight-leg jeans, neutral hoodies, minimal watches, scarves, and structured bags that fit one’s lifestyle, whether it’s sporty, casual, or professional.
Ultimately, Osbourne underscores that fashion is not about being the most flamboyant. Instead, it is about authenticity and enhancing one’s personal style. “I just love to see people change and enlighten and feel better about themselves. It’s not just about the clothes; it’s a lifestyle, you know? It’s getting the best out of you.”
As 2026 approaches, Osbourne’s insights offer a refreshing perspective for men looking to redefine their style and embrace self-expression through fashion.
