A propane leak from an ice resurfacing machine triggered a significant explosion at the Taber Community Centre in southern Alberta on December 17, 2023. The incident caused extensive damage to the facility, which houses multiple recreational areas, including two ice rinks and a curling rink. The investigation, announced on Wednesday, revealed that the explosion was not due to human error.

Taber Fire Chief Steve Munshaw clarified during a news conference that the explosion was caused by a failure in a component of the fuel system of the ice resurfacer. This malfunction led to a propane leak, creating a gas cloud within the rink. An electrical heater ignited the gas, resulting in the explosion.

Photos taken after the blast depict the destruction, with several concrete walls collapsed and debris scattered throughout the building. Fortunately, there were a dozen people present at the time of the explosion, but no injuries occurred, largely due to the prompt response from both staff and emergency responders. “We can’t thank our lucky stars enough,” said Mayor Andrew Prokop.

Community Impact and Recovery Efforts

The aftermath of the explosion has left much of the community centre unusable, significantly affecting local residents. Mayor Prokop emphasized the facility’s importance, stating, “The community center is more than just a building. It is a gathering for sports, recreation, local programs, and businesses.”

While the investigation into the explosion has concluded, the timeline for reopening the community centre remains uncertain. The town is currently awaiting the completion of insurance assessments and safety inspections. Chief Administrative Officer Darren Tebow noted that independent testing is underway to check for hazardous materials, including asbestos, that may have been disturbed during the explosion.

The building, constructed around 1970, may have contained asbestos, which was commonly used in construction at that time. “Even areas that may not appear to be visibly affected must be addressed because the community center operates with interconnected systems — ventilation, gas, water, electrical and fire alarm systems are tied together,” Tebow explained.

The town expects to provide a tentative timeline for reopening by the end of January. In the meantime, other local departments have offered space for displaced employees, and nearby communities are accommodating local hockey teams and other activities. Mayor Prokop expressed gratitude for this support, stating, “That generosity has meant a great deal not only to the municipality, but to the community as a whole.”

Future Plans and Community Support

Prior to the explosion, the town had already initiated discussions about potential renovations to the facility and had applied for various government grants. While waiting for responses to these applications, Taber has also entered the popular Kraft Hockeyville contest, which offers a $250,000 grant for improvements to the winning town’s arena.

As the community navigates the aftermath of the explosion, the focus remains on recovery and rebuilding. With the support of local residents and neighboring towns, Taber aims to restore the community centre as a vital hub for recreation and social engagement.
