The Kankakee boys basketball team faced its first defeat of the season on March 3, 2024, as they lost to DePaul Prep 56-49 during the Team Rose Shootout held at Mount Carmel. The Kays, who have aspirations of claiming the IHSA Class 3A State championship, were unable to maintain their unbeaten record against the two-time defending champions.

Kankakee started strong, scoring the first five points of the game. They managed to lead on three occasions in the opening quarter, but DePaul Prep quickly took control with a decisive 17-6 run, establishing a lead they would not relinquish. Kankakee’s record now stands at 5-1 after this challenging matchup.

Coach Chris Pickett expressed the importance of such competitive games, stating, “It’s good to be in games like this because it lets you know where you are. This is like the ultimate test.” He acknowledged the need for his team to regroup and focus on their next steps, emphasizing the importance of unity moving forward.

The game featured notable performances, particularly from Rykan Woo, who led DePaul Prep with 21 points, 12 of which came in the first half. The Rams capitalized on their free-throw opportunities, converting 25 of 29 attempts, a significant factor in their victory. In contrast, Kankakee struggled at the line, making only 12 of 25 free throws.

Pickett pointed out the impact of free-throw performance on the game’s outcome: “We lost by seven, so there you go.” He was pleased with his team’s defensive effort in the second half but acknowledged that lapses in the first half hindered their chances against a well-coached DePaul squad.

Kankakee’s star player, Lincoln Williams, who had been averaging 32.8 points per game, was limited to just 14 points as DePaul rolled out a robust defensive strategy. Forward EJ Hazelett stood out for Kankakee, matching Woo’s scoring with 21 points, including critical three-pointers in the second half.

Reflecting on the game, Pickett noted the need for improvement: “The reputation they have as a team is that they’re going to pack the paint and make you have to earn everything offensively.” He acknowledged that while his team adjusted better in the second half, the early struggles proved costly.

Looking ahead, Kankakee is set to face Peoria on Tuesday, followed by a home matchup against Bloom on March 8, 2024. They will also participate in the Midwest Showdown against Vashon from Missouri, presenting further opportunities for growth and competition in the season.
