The Brandon Wheat Kings showcased their strength in the Manitoba U18 AAA Hockey League, securing a decisive 7-0 victory against the Central Plains Capitals over the weekend. The match, held at J&G Homes Arena, marked an impressive debut for 13-year-old Kale Nicol, who scored a goal assisted by his older brother, Reid Nicol. This strong performance solidified the Wheat Kings’ position in the league as they continue to pursue the championship.

The Wheat Kings, currently standing fourth in the league with a record of 19 wins, 6 losses, and 1 overtime loss, dominated the game from the outset. In addition to Kale Nicol’s highlight-reel goal, Hudson Champagne contributed significantly with two goals, while Crew Elder, Reid Nicol, Max Dawson, and Hunter Ethelston also found the back of the net. Goaltender Cooper Dryden earned the shutout, making 22 saves, while Riley Foster, the Capitals’ netminder, faced 39 shots during the match.

Looking ahead, the Wheat Kings have a busy schedule with four games next week. They will host the Winnipeg Thrashers on December 6 at 19:30, followed by a visit to Dauphin’s Credit Union Place to face the Parkland Rangers on December 8 at 19:30. The Wheat Kings will then return home to play against the Southwest Cougars on December 9 at 20:00, before heading to Souris/Glenwood Memorial Complex for a matchup on December 10 at 14:00. They will resume play after the Christmas break on January 2, 2024, when they host the Winnipeg Bruins.

The Southwest Cougars also had a successful weekend, capturing two victories against the Kenora Thistles. Ranked fifth in the league with a record of 17 wins, 7 losses, and 2 overtime losses, the Cougars triumphed 6-0 on Saturday before securing a thrilling 9-5 win on Sunday. Shane Elder stood out with a hat trick in the latter match, while Jack Polasek recorded two goals and four assists. Goaltender Brady Shields made 22 saves on Sunday, while Nate Brown earned a shutout with 26 saves on Saturday.

The Cougars will conclude their first half of the season with a home-and-home series against the Wheat Kings, before returning from the Christmas break on January 3 and 4 to host the Eastman Selects.

Meanwhile, the Yellowhead Chiefs had a mixed week, finishing with one victory and two losses. They faced the Central Plains Capitals, where they fell 7-6 despite a hat trick performance from Alec Strachan. The Chiefs then rebounded with a 7-2 victory against the Norman Northstars, led by strong performances from Nolan Kozak, Grady McNish, and Ethan Turchinski. However, they could not overcome the first-place Winnipeg Wild, losing 3-1. The Chiefs’ current record stands at 13 wins and 15 losses.

As the league approaches the holiday break, the Chiefs will face a challenging road ahead, including games against the Winnipeg Bruins and the Winnipeg Wild, before returning to action on January 3 against the Avros.

The Parkland Rangers, positioned eighth in the league with a record of 13 wins, 8 losses, and 4 overtime losses, enjoyed a mixed week as well.
