Nanaimo Honors Culture and Heritage at 2026 Awards Ceremony

The city of Nanaimo will recognize outstanding contributions to its cultural landscape at the upcoming 2026 Culture Awards on April 14, 2026. This event will celebrate individuals who have significantly impacted the arts, culture, and heritage of the region. The awards aim to highlight the importance of local talent and the role they play in fostering community spirit.

Celebrating Artistic Excellence

Among the honorees is Leon Potter, who will receive the award for Excellence in Culture for his extensive work in theatre. As a professor at Vancouver Island University, Potter expressed his gratitude, stating he feels “flattered and overwhelmed” by the recognition. His passion for theatre began in high school, where he would travel across town to audition for various productions.

Potter views his career as a privilege, reflecting on the creative process involved in theatre production. He remarked, “The arts, as far as I’m concerned, are one of the truest expressions of what it means to be human.” His commitment extends beyond teaching; he actively participates in adjudicating film festivals and leading workshops, emphasizing the significance of storytelling in our lives.

Luis Porretta will also be celebrated with an Honour in Culture award, recognizing his dedication to nurturing Nanaimo’s jazz scene. Having moved to Nanaimo 23 years ago, Porretta founded Quadwrangle Music Productions, which specializes in promoting Canadian jazz music. He noted that, at the start, interest in jazz was limited, but he has witnessed a transformation, with multiple venues now regularly hosting jazz performances.

Porretta, a jazz guitarist himself, has shifted his focus from performing to promoting and producing music. He believes jazz is a sophisticated art form that requires deep understanding and appreciation. “Jazz music is the music of the soul,” he explained, pointing out its complexity and the commitment needed to truly engage with it.

Preserving Heritage Through Community Efforts

Brian McFadden, president of the Vancouver Island Military Museum, will receive the Honour in Heritage award. While he appreciates the recognition, McFadden emphasizes that it reflects the hard work of numerous volunteers who have contributed to the museum’s success. He joined the museum as a volunteer in 1998 and dedicated his time to its growth, eventually becoming president in 2025.

The museum, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, plays a vital role in educating the public about Canada’s military history. McFadden stated, “Our slogan is, ‘come see, come learn, come experience history,’ and that is exactly what we would like to do.” He highlighted the unique aspect of Nanaimo, where multiple cultural and heritage sites are located within walking distance, making it convenient for visitors.

The 2026 Culture Awards ceremony will take place at the Port Theatre and will be open to the community. Tickets are available for free through the theatre’s website, encouraging widespread participation in celebrating local culture and heritage.
