SkyTrain’s Broadway Extension Hits Milestone with Rail Installation Complete
The construction of the SkyTrain’s Millennium Line Broadway extension has achieved a significant milestone, with the installation of 100% of the running rail now complete. This update was announced by the provincial government of British Columbia this week. The completed stretch covers the entire **5.7-kilometre** extension between **VCC-Clark Station** and the future **Arbutus Station**.
The installation process involved welding the running rails into segments of **400 metres** each. Crews then positioned these segments onto the elevated guideway and within the tunnels. Following this accomplishment, teams have commenced the installation of the linear induction motor (LIM) rail, starting from the elevated guideway segment located west of VCC-Clark Station in the **False Creek Flats** area.
LIM technology is utilized by both the Expo and Millennium lines of SkyTrain. The LIM rail consists of a continuous aluminum and steel plate that is situated between the running rails. It generates electromagnetic energy, which is essential for propelling trains forward during acceleration and braking.
Additionally, a power rail will be installed alongside the tracks to ensure a continuous electrical supply for the trains. Crews are also working on installing communication cables along the tracks, which will connect the trains to the SkyTrain operations and control centre. The installation of electrical systems and various equipment within the six new subway stations is also progressing, allowing these structures to take shape at ground level.
Dynamic testing of the system is anticipated to begin in **2026**, continuing through **2027**. The Millennium Line extension to Arbutus is set to open in **Fall 2027**. Major construction on this project began in the spring of **2021**.
Surrey-Langley Extension Progress
In parallel, significant advancements are being made on the SkyTrain’s Expo Line Surrey-Langley extension, which runs from **King George Station** to the future **Langley City Centre Station**. Construction is currently underway along the **16-kilometre** Fraser Highway segment, where crews are forming concrete columns and preparing for the launch of four specialized gantry crane machines in the second half of **2025**. These cranes will facilitate the construction of the concrete elevated guideway using thousands of pre-cast concrete segments.
The formation of eight new elevated station structures is also in progress, with the future **Green Timbers Station** emerging as the most advanced site. In **January 2026**, the provincial government announced that pieces of the running rails for the Surrey-Langley SkyTrain extension had begun arriving, marking the start of track work scheduled for the upcoming spring.
Construction on the Surrey-Langley extension commenced in **November 2025** and is expected to be completed and operational by late **2029**. Once both the Broadway and Surrey-Langley extensions are open, the total length of the SkyTrain network will exceed **100 kilometres**, representing a combined addition of **22 kilometres** from these two projects.
