Newman Comets Secure Victory Over Kewanee in Thrilling Match
The Newman Comets triumphed over Kewanee with a score of 54-44 in a boys basketball matchup on Friday, extending their unbeaten record to 18-0 and improving to 2-0 in the Three Rivers East Conference. After a tightly contested first half, the Comets pulled away in the second half, showcasing their depth and teamwork.
Leading the charge for Newman was John Rowzee, who scored 15 points. He was supported by Garret Matznick with 13 points and Asher Ernst, who contributed 10 points. Additionally, George Jungerman added nine points, helping the Comets secure the win on home turf.
In other boys basketball action, Alleman bested Sterling with a score of 68-60. The Pioneers utilized a strong third quarter, outscoring Sterling 16-11 to build a lead that the Warriors could not overcome. Xavian Prather led the Sterling effort with 19 points, while AJ Coleman contributed 18 points. Notably, Jack Saathoff was a force on the boards, pulling down 18 rebounds.
Mendota faced Erie-Prophetstown, ultimately winning 70-60. The Panthers struggled early, falling behind 29-13 in the first quarter, which proved to be a hurdle they could not surmount.
In girls basketball, Polo secured a convincing victory against Morrison, winning 54-31. The Marcos’ success was bolstered by the impressive performances of Carlee Grobe and Cam Jones, each scoring 18 points. Polo’s sharpshooting was evident as the team hit nine three-pointers during the game. For Morrison, Sophie Damhoff led with 15 points, while Avery White added 12 points.
In girls bowling, Dixon achieved a strong showing with a score of 2,999 against United Township’s 2,252. Madelyn Bird was the standout for Dixon, leading with a series score of 545 in the dual match held on Thursday.
These results highlight a competitive atmosphere across the Sauk Valley sports scene, showcasing the talent and determination of local athletes. As the season progresses, teams continue to strive for excellence, setting the stage for thrilling matchups ahead.
