Environment Canada has issued marine weather warnings for the southwest coast of Newfoundland and northeastern Nova Scotia in anticipation of a winter storm this weekend. The storm system is moving towards the region, bringing the potential for blizzard-like conditions. As temperatures drop, residents are advised to prepare for significant snowfall and strong winds.

Affected areas include the Banquereau ocean bank, where a gale warning is in effect due to predicted wind speeds of up to 35 knots. The storm could deliver up to 20 cm of snow from Sunday into Monday, particularly impacting Pictou County, Guysborough County, Antigonish County, Richmond County, and parts of Inverness County.

Weather Forecast and Warnings

Northwesterly wind gusts are expected to reach between 70 and 90 km/h, contributing to hazardous travel conditions across the province. Environment Canada has noted that while the exact track of the storm remains uncertain, warnings may be issued depending on its proximity to the coast.

Currently, there are no special weather statements or warnings for Halifax, although light snow is forecasted to begin as early as Saturday night. On Saturday, snow squalls are expected to diminish, leading to quieter weather for much of the day. The next weather system to monitor will arrive late Sunday into Monday, with uncertainty surrounding its development and impact on the Maritime region.

Residents are advised to exercise caution while traveling, as snow-covered roads and reduced visibility may affect driving conditions. As the winter season progresses, this storm serves as a reminder of the challenges posed by severe weather in the region.
