American Airlines Inspects Boeing 737 MAX 8 After Bullet Damage
American Airlines is conducting a comprehensive inspection of a Boeing 737 MAX 8 after the aircraft was discovered with gunshot holes upon landing at Miami International Airport (MIA) on March 11, 2024. The aircraft, operating as Flight 924, arrived from Medellin Airport (MDE), Colombia, where it is believed to have sustained the damage. The airline confirmed that the right aileron of the plane was affected, although the full extent of the damage remains to be assessed.
The aircraft, registered as tail number N342SX, has since been relocated to Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) for a detailed examination by American Airlines’ maintenance team. Following its arrival at DFW, there have been no records of the aircraft flying on any other missions, according to data from FlightAware.
Incident Overview and Investigation
The incident occurred early on March 11, when the aircraft took off from Medellin. It landed safely at MIA at 10:30 AM, where ground crew members discovered the bullet holes in the wing. Despite the damage, the aircrew reported no in-flight issues, and all 160 passengers aboard were unharmed. This marks the second incident involving an American Airlines 737 MAX 8 being struck by gunfire in recent years, with a similar occurrence reported in Haiti in 2024.
Colombian authorities are currently investigating the incident, suspecting that the aircraft was hit while landing in Medellin. They are looking into a potential link to a criminal organization believed to be responsible for the gunshots. In a statement to the New York Post, American Airlines said, “The aircraft was immediately removed from service for further inspection and repair. We will work closely with all relevant authorities to investigate this incident.”
Repair Process and Safety Measures
Upon arrival at the DFW repair depot, American Airlines personnel will conduct a thorough inspection of the damage. The evaluation area will extend beyond the visible puncture, as gunfire can create radiating cracks. Repair techniques will differ based on the materials used in the aileron, which is composed of both composite and aluminum.
If the damage is to a metal part, a reinforcing plate will be cut and welded over the hole to restore structural integrity. In the case of composite material, technicians will smooth the edges of the hole using taper sanding before applying new layers of carbon fiber and resin. Following repairs, the movement of the aileron will be rigorously tested to ensure it operates correctly and remains well-balanced. Once the repairs meet FAA Airworthiness Standards, the aircraft will be repainted to match its livery and prepared to re-enter service.
The timeline for returning the aircraft to service is estimated to take several days, depending on the extent of the damage and the necessary repairs.
In the broader context, the incident occurred during a period of heightened regional instability. While there is no direct connection between the gunfire incident and wider events, it coincided with increased violence in Colombia, particularly involving drug cartels like the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). Just prior to this incident, Mexico experienced significant armed confrontations following the death of a prominent cartel leader.
American Airlines recently announced plans to resume flights to Venezuela for the first time since 2019, further emphasizing its commitment to operations in the region. Colombian authorities have been mobilizing their armed forces along the Venezuelan border in response to concerns regarding potential retaliatory actions stemming from ongoing tensions in the area.
This incident underscores the challenges that airlines face in maintaining safety and security amid evolving regional dynamics. American Airlines is expected to continue collaborating with authorities to ensure both the safety of its passengers and the integrity of its operations.
