Mexican Military Operation Ends in Death of Notorious Cartel Leader
The Mexican military launched a decisive operation targeting notorious cartel leader Nemesio Oseguera, known as “El Mencho,” resulting in his death on March 10, 2024. The confrontation occurred at a luxury resort in the picturesque town of Tapalpa, located in Jalisco State, as tourists enjoyed their stay amid the serene landscape. The operation unfolded at dawn, sending shockwaves through the resort as gunfire erupted, causing chaos among visitors.
Witnesses described the terrifying sounds of machine gun fire as the military engaged in a firefight with El Mencho‘s security detail. A tourist at the resort, who requested anonymity for safety reasons, recounted, “It was terrifying… you could hear machine guns firing from the ground into the air and from the air to the ground.” He estimated that the shootout lasted for several hours, escalating in intensity. The military operation was aimed at capturing the leader of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), a group notorious for its violent tactics and significant presence in the drug trade.
As the situation unfolded, the local authorities initially advised tourists to shelter in place. It was not until Tuesday that visitors were allowed to leave the exclusive cabins. The operation was reportedly centered around El Mencho‘s last known whereabouts, where he was seen with a girlfriend, who has been identified as a key figure in tracing the drug lord’s movements.
The aftermath of the military action left the resort area in disarray. Residents reported finding hundreds of shell casings scattered around the two-story stone house that served as El Mencho‘s hideout. According to Mexican media, the luxurious interior revealed a stark contrast to the violence that erupted outside, showcasing unmade beds, open drawers, and a table adorned with religious images and candles. Medications for kidney issues that had reportedly plagued El Mencho were also discovered.
The operation not only marked a significant moment in the ongoing fight against drug cartels in Mexico but also led to an immediate wave of retaliatory violence by the CJNG. Reports indicated that unrest spread across 20 of Mexico’s 32 states, with cars and buses being set ablaze on the outskirts of Tapalpa. A local domestic worker described the scene, recalling, “They were burning cars and buses on the outskirts of Tapalpa.” By Tuesday, the once-bustling tourist town had become eerily quiet as visitors departed, shaken by the violence.
The military’s success in neutralizing one of Mexico’s most wanted criminals highlights the ongoing challenges the country faces in combating organized crime. As authorities continue to grapple with the ramifications of El Mencho‘s death, the impact on local communities and the broader drug trade remains to be seen.
