Dog Boro Found Safe After Spain Train Crash, Owner Reunited
A woman has been reunited with her dog, Boro, after he went missing following a tragic train derailment in southern Spain. The incident, which occurred on March 24, 2024, involved a high-speed train that collided with another train, resulting in numerous fatalities and injuries.
Ana García, 26, was traveling with her pregnant sister and Boro when their train derailed for reasons still under investigation. In the chaos that ensued, Boro fled the scene, prompting García to issue a heartfelt plea on social media for help in locating her pet.
Searching for Boro
García’s emotional appeal resonated widely, as social media users across Spain rallied to aid in the search. On Thursday, March 28, forest firefighters in southern Spain located Boro and shared images of the joyful reunion with García. “Many thanks to all of Spain and everyone who has got involved so much,” she expressed. “It gave me great hope and we’ve done it.”
The collision, which occurred near Adamuz in the Córdoba region, resulted in the deaths of dozens of passengers and injuries to over 150 others. After the derailment, rescue teams helped García and her sister escape from the train, but Boro dashed away in fear, leaving García distraught.
In her initial plea, she had urged, “Please, if you can help, look for the animals.” Boro was not just a pet; he was considered part of the family, accompanying them on their return from a weekend getaway.
Community Support
The search for Boro gained traction when the Spanish political party, Partido Animalista Con el Medio Ambiente (PACMA), joined the effort. They shared details about the search on social media, emphasizing the urgency of finding the frightened dog. In a post on X, PACMA wrote, “Boro has gone missing after the train accident in Adamuz. He is Ana’s dog, one of the victims, and we urgently need to find him.”
By Thursday, PACMA confirmed the successful reunion between García and Boro, leading to expressions of relief from the organization. PACMA president, Javier Luna, commented on social media, stating, “From the Animalist Party, we are delighted with this happy ending amid the tragedy that occurred last Sunday.”
They further highlighted the need for improved emergency protocols for animals during accidents, noting that Boro’s case could have had a different outcome with better planning.
A Week of Tragedy
The focus on Boro’s rescue came amid a week of train-related tragedies in Spain. The initial derailment was the deadliest incident in the country since a 2013 crash in Galicia, which claimed 80 lives. Just days after Boro’s ordeal, another train accident occurred in northeastern Spain near Barcelona, resulting in one fatality and at least 37 injuries. A subsequent incident on Thursday in southeastern Spain involved a commuter train colliding with a crane, sending six people to the hospital with minor injuries.
As the nation reflects on the series of accidents and the impact on railway safety, the story of Boro and Ana García serves as a poignant reminder of the human and animal connections that endure even in the face of tragedy.
The joy of Boro’s safe return provides a glimmer of hope amid the sorrow, showcasing the resilience of community support in difficult times.
