Global Fashion Icons Gather in Rome to Honor Valentino Garavani
Fashion luminaries and devoted fans gathered in Rome on March 1, 2024, to pay their final respects to the legendary designer Valentino Garavani at a moving funeral service held at the Basilica di Santa Maria degli Angeli e dei Martiri. This ceremony followed a two-day public viewing at the Valentino Foundation’s headquarters, where admirers celebrated the life and legacy of the designer who passed away at the age of 93 in his Rome residence.
A Star-Studded Farewell
Among the attendees were prominent figures from the fashion world, including designers Tom Ford and Donatella Versace, as well as the influential Vogue editor Anna Wintour. Hollywood actress Anne Hathaway, known for donning numerous Valentino creations, also paid tribute to the designer. Fans gathered outside the church, many dressed in red or carrying red accessories, as a homage to Valentino’s signature color.
Valentino, often referred to as the “last emperor” of Italian fashion, was beloved by a diverse array of icons, from royals like Queen Rania of Jordan to stars such as Julia Roberts. His exquisite gowns have graced countless prestigious events, including the Academy Awards. Notably, Roberts chose a vintage black and white column dress from Valentino when she accepted her Oscar for Best Actress in 2001.
Memories and Tributes
During the service, Giancarlo Giammetti, Valentino’s long-time personal and professional partner, delivered a heartfelt remembrance speech. “I want to thank Valentino for teaching me beauty,” he expressed, his voice filled with emotion. “It was a beauty that followed us throughout our lives. Our journey will always continue,” he added, reflecting on their shared dreams and achievements.
Hundreds had already come to pay their respects during the public viewing, showcasing the profound impact Valentino had on the fashion industry and beyond. He maintained his atelier in Rome while predominantly unveiling his collections in Paris, bridging two of the world’s fashion capitals.
As the funeral service concluded, the legacy of Valentino Garavani will continue to inspire future generations of designers and fashion lovers worldwide. His contributions to the industry are immeasurable, and the outpouring of love and admiration during this final farewell serves as a testament to his indelible mark on the world of fashion.
