Fears Persist for Man Freed from Immigration Detention in Minneapolis

A man released from an immigration detention center in Minneapolis is now living in fear of leaving his home. Garrison Gibson, who fled civil war in Liberia as a child, expressed his anxiety following his release after an arrest during a recent immigration crackdown. His case has drawn significant attention amid ongoing protests against immigration enforcement in the region.

On January 11, 2023, federal officers forcefully entered Gibson’s home, using a battering ram to break down the door. This incident has become emblematic of the aggressive tactics used during the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement operations, which have reportedly led to over 2,500 arrests in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul. Protests and counterprotests were anticipated in the area as these operations continue.

Gibson, aged 38, is facing deportation due to a drug conviction from 2008 that was later dismissed. Despite this, he has maintained legal status through an order of supervision. After his arrest, a judge ruled that federal officials failed to inform him properly before revoking this status. On Friday, he was briefly detained again during a routine check-in with immigration officials.

His cousin Abena Abraham reported that officials from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) indicated that Stephen Miller, White House Deputy Chief of Staff, ordered Gibson’s re-arrest. The White House has denied these claims, asserting that Miller had no involvement in the matter. Following his arrest, Gibson was transferred to a detention facility in Texas but was allowed to return home after the judge’s ruling.

Living under the shadow of fear, Gibson remarked, “I don’t leave the house.” His family faced more than just emotional distress; they had to use a dumbbell to secure their front door against the freezing temperatures after the raid, eventually spending $700 to repair the damage caused by federal agents.

A spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security defended the operations, labeling the judge who ruled in favor of Gibson as an “activist judge” attempting to obstruct the government’s efforts to remove “criminal illegal aliens.” Tricia McLaughlin, Assistant Secretary of Homeland Security, emphasized their commitment to detaining and deporting individuals without legal rights to remain in the United States.

Gibson countered the government’s narrative, stating, “If I was a violent person, I would not have been out these past 17 years, checking in.” He has adhered to all legal requirements during his time in the U.S.

The recent crackdown in Minnesota is reported to be the largest of its kind, involving more than 2,000 federal officers. This has led to ongoing demonstrations in the Twin Cities, a region known for its liberal stance on immigration. Protesters have reported aggressive tactics used by immigration officers, including pulling individuals from their homes and vehicles. The situation escalated recently when a U.S. citizen, Renee Good, was fatally shot during a confrontation with law enforcement on January 7.

A federal judge has since ruled that immigration officers are prohibited from detaining or using tear gas on peaceful protesters who are not obstructing law enforcement efforts, underscoring the tensions surrounding immigration enforcement in the area.
