High-Speed Chase in Laredo Leads to Arrest of Human Smuggler

A high-speed chase in Laredo, Texas, culminated in the arrest of a human smuggler, identified as Jorge Alonso Diaz Jr., on December 17, 2025. The pursuit began when Diaz attempted to evade Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) troopers, ultimately resulting in a collision with a commercial vehicle. Inside Diaz’s Lincoln Navigator, authorities discovered ten undocumented immigrants alongside a child.

Following his arrest, Diaz faced multiple charges, including smuggling of persons, causing serious bodily injury, and evading arrest. This incident is part of the ongoing efforts by Texas DPS to combat human smuggling through their Operation Lone Star 2.0 initiative, which aims to enhance public safety along the Texas-Mexico border.

Recent Operations Yield Multiple Arrests

The arrest of Diaz is not an isolated incident. Just days prior, Texas DPS and Laredo Border Patrol agents identified over a dozen undocumented individuals within a residence in Laredo. During this operation on December 17, authorities apprehended seventeen people who were in the United States illegally. One person, labeled a “suspected caretaker,” was also arrested and charged with human smuggling.

A photograph shared by Chief Patrol Agent Desi D. DeLeon on social media depicted ten individuals seated on the kitchen floor of the home. DeLeon remarked, “Operation Success!” regarding the sting, although further details about the caretaker or the other individuals remain undisclosed.

The string of arrests follows a successful interception of a separate smuggling attempt, which involved another high-speed chase. In that incident, a driver and seven individuals were taken into custody after a pursuit. On December 8, two U.S. citizens were arrested for allegedly smuggling four undocumented individuals, including two Guatemalan nationals, one Mexican national, and one Honduran national, into their Laredo residence.

Significant Border Encounters in Laredo

According to data released by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Laredo accounted for a substantial 4,400 land border encounters during the 2025 fiscal year. In the broader context, Texas’s southwest region experienced a total of 103,124 encounters in the same period.

The ongoing issue of illegal entry has significant repercussions, with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection emphasizing that such actions often lead to deportation. A recent statement from the agency warned, “Don’t risk it,” as they continue to address the challenges posed by human smuggling operations.
