Turkish Police Detain 115 ISIS Suspects Ahead of Holiday Attacks
Turkish authorities have detained 115 individuals suspected of being affiliated with the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS). The arrests were made as part of a significant operation aimed at preventing planned attacks during the upcoming Christmas and New Year celebrations.
The Istanbul Chief Prosecutor’s Office announced the details of the operation on December 7, 2023. According to the statement, police received intelligence indicating that these ISIS members were targeting non-Muslim communities in Turkey. To execute the operation, police conducted raids on 124 locations across Istanbul, successfully capturing 115 of the 137 suspects they were pursuing.
During the raids, law enforcement officials seized several firearms, including pistols, along with ammunition. This operation underscores ongoing concerns about potential terrorist activities during festive periods, particularly when large gatherings are expected.
Authorities have intensified their efforts to counter ISIS activities in Turkey, especially given the group’s history of targeting civilians during significant holidays. The Turkish government has repeatedly emphasized its commitment to ensuring the safety of all citizens, regardless of their religious background.
In recent years, Turkey has been a focal point in the fight against ISIS, with numerous operations leading to the arrest of suspected militants. As the festive season approaches, security measures are likely to be heightened across major cities to prevent any acts of violence.
The apprehension of these suspects marks a crucial step in safeguarding public safety and maintaining peace during a time when communities come together to celebrate.
