International Holocaust Remembrance Day Highlights Rising Antisemitism
On January 27, 2024, the world observes International Holocaust Remembrance Day, marking the 71st anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp. This date serves as a solemn reminder of the more than one million individuals who perished in gas chambers during the Holocaust. Individuals across Canada and around the globe will take this opportunity to remember the victims and reflect on the persistent threat of antisemitism, a concern that has heightened in recent years.
According to Simon Wolle, CEO of B’nai Brith Canada, the events of October 7, 2024, when Hamas attacked Israel, have intensified the urgency of this remembrance. Wolle emphasized the need for proactive leadership to combat rising antisemitism: “This has been important every year and it remains important this year. We are witnessing warning signs of Canadian values being undermined by acts of hatred and antisemitism, and we’re going down the wrong path.”
Commemorative Events and Calls to Action
B’nai Brith will commemorate this significant day with events in Ottawa and Toronto. Wolle will represent the organization at a ceremony at the National Holocaust Monument in Ottawa. Later, he will attend a private event in Toronto hosted by City Councillor James Pasternak. These gatherings will honor the memories of those lost while also addressing the contemporary challenges facing the Jewish community.
In conjunction with these events, B’nai Brith plans to hold a news conference on January 26, 2024, to advocate for the federal government’s appointment of a special envoy to combat antisemitism. This position has been vacant since the retirement of Deborah Lyons in 2025. Wolle noted, “It created a huge void in terms of explaining and advocating and bringing the necessary information forward into the federal government’s ear.”
Wolle also called for a royal commission to investigate systemic antisemitism in Canada. He pointed out that incidents are occurring across multiple provinces simultaneously, indicating a widespread issue that requires immediate attention and action.
Education and Awareness for Future Generations
Looking forward, Wolle highlighted the importance of education in preserving the memory of Holocaust survivors. He noted that there are still several thousand survivors living in Canada, and their stories are vital for educating younger generations. “That opportunity will not be with us forever,” he said. “We need to take advantage of all those opportunities to hear these stories in real time.”
Wolle expressed concerns about the effectiveness of modern communication platforms, stating, “TikTok is not going to be the forum to inform our youth on the depth of experience of the Holocaust.” He emphasized that the horror of these experiences must not be lost to time or diluted through oversimplified mediums.
Another significant date is Holocaust Martyrs’ and Heroes’ Remembrance Day, observed on April 14, 2026, in Israel. This national day of commemoration honors the six million Jews murdered during the Holocaust, with the State Opening Ceremony planned at Yad Vashem on April 13.
As International Holocaust Remembrance Day approaches, the call for remembrance, education, and action against antisemitism resonates strongly. The lessons of history remain crucial as communities strive to prevent the repetition of past atrocities.
