Minneapolis Neighbors Unite to Support Immigrants Amid Crackdown
Residents in Minneapolis are coming together to support each other amid heightened fears of immigration enforcement. Following the arrest of a local family member by US immigration authorities in late 2023, community member Jennifer Arnold has mobilized her neighbors to assist those feeling vulnerable. The situation escalated recently when a federal agent fatally shot Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old woman, further instilling fear in the community.
Arnold’s initiative began when a neighbor contacted her, devastated after witnessing her husband being apprehended while they were at a work site. “She answered the phone sobbing,” Arnold recounted. Initially, Arnold focused on helping her neighbors who were hesitant to leave their homes. “It’s not safe,” she noted.
As the situation evolved, Arnold observed a decline in the number of children waiting at the school bus stop near her home. Typically bustling with around 20 children, the stop now averaged only 10. “Many of those families didn’t feel safe sending their kids because they had to walk a couple blocks to get to the stop,” Arnold explained.
Determined to help, she reached out to the community, asking, “If I could get someone to walk with your kid to the bus stop, or take them, would you send them?” The response was overwhelmingly positive. By the second week of December, Arnold arranged for volunteers to help a dozen children reach school, a number that has since grown to 30. “And then the next week, it was 18 kids,” she added, highlighting the community’s willingness to support one another.
In addition to safe transportation, Arnold spearheaded a holiday initiative. She encouraged volunteers to “adopt a family” for Christmas, organizing food deliveries to ensure that those in need had enough to eat during the holidays. “We did one right before Christmas and one right before New Year’s,” she said. “Folks said to me, ‘My kids would have been hungry if we hadn’t done that.’”
The recent fatal shooting of Good by masked agents from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has only intensified the community’s desire to help. Arnold shared that while picking up a four-year-old for school, she encountered many others on the streets eager to participate in the effort. “Since what happened on Wednesday, my list is growing,” she remarked.
In response to these community needs, local schools have adapted by launching remote learning options for students who may feel unsafe attending in-person classes. Minneapolis officials announced this measure on January 5, 2024, indicating the ongoing impact of the immigration crackdown on education.
Neighborhood vigilance has increased as residents use whistles to alert one another about the presence of ICE agents. Natasha Dockter, a leader in the local education union, described her constant use of the whistle, stating, “I use it more often than I would like to.” Dockter also carries extra whistles to distribute to neighbors interested in joining the effort.
While many residents actively seek to alleviate the fears of their neighbors, some families are coping with trauma in silence. Becca Dryden, a local parent, highlighted the struggles children face as they process the events around them. “There are kids who have lost a family member, who are completely traumatized,” she said. Dryden emphasized the difficulty parents face in explaining these realities to their children. “This is a trauma that’s happening to all of our children.”
As the community continues to navigate these challenges, the willingness of neighbors to step up for one another reflects a strong commitment to support and solidarity in a time of uncertainty.
