Russia Criticizes Zelensky as Trump Prepares for Peace Talks
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is set to meet with former President Donald Trump in Florida this weekend to discuss new proposals aimed at ending the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. This meeting occurs amid rising tensions, as Russia accused Zelensky and his European allies of attempting to undermine a US-brokered peace plan.
The discussions, scheduled for Sunday, come as Trump intensifies his efforts to mediate a resolution to the conflict, which has resulted in tens of thousands of fatalities since the war escalated in February 2022. The latest peace proposal includes a 20-point plan that seeks to establish a ceasefire along current front lines while allowing Ukraine to withdraw troops from the eastern regions, where demilitarized buffer zones could be established.
Zelensky confirmed that his office is preparing for the meeting, stating that he had also engaged in telephone discussions with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and various European leaders in anticipation of this diplomatic effort.
Details of the Peace Proposal
The new plan is notable for its explicit acknowledgment of potential territorial concessions by Ukraine, marking a significant shift from previous proposals. Unlike an earlier 28-point plan presented by Washington, which aligned closely with Russian demands, this latest initiative has been crafted with Ukrainian input and includes separate agreements on security guarantees, reconstruction, and economic support. Zelensky emphasized that these components are evolving daily.
“During our discussions, we will address these documents, including security guarantees,” Zelensky stated. He also highlighted critical topics for negotiation, such as the eastern region of Donbas and the status of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which has been under Russian control since the invasion.
The Kremlin has expressed strong opposition to the new proposals. Russian foreign policy aide Yuri Ushakov held discussions with US officials, while Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov criticized Zelensky’s approach. Ryabkov articulated that Russia’s ability to finalize an agreement hinges on the political will of the opposing side. He specifically accused Kyiv and its European supporters of escalating efforts to derail the peace talks.
Challenges Ahead
Ryabkov remarked that the current proposal diverges significantly from earlier discussions between US and Russian officials. He insisted that reaching a comprehensive accord necessitates addressing the fundamental issues at the root of the crisis. Any agreement must align with parameters set by Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin during their meeting in Alaska in August.
Zelensky acknowledged existing disagreements with Washington regarding core issues such as territorial control and the management of the Zaporizhzhia plant. The US has urged Ukraine to withdraw from 20 percent of the eastern Donetsk region, which is one of Russia’s primary territorial objectives. Additionally, the US has proposed joint control of the Zaporizhzhia facility, raising concerns for Zelensky, who stated that any territorial concessions would require the approval of the Ukrainian populace through a referendum.
While Ukraine has reportedly secured concessions in the latest plan, such as the removal of a clause that would have required Kyiv to renounce its NATO aspirations, Russia remains steadfast in its demands for a complete withdrawal from Donbas and the cessation of NATO membership efforts. Moscow has also insisted on prohibiting Western peacekeeping forces in Ukraine and imposing stringent political and military restrictions.
Zelensky indicated that Ukrainian negotiators are not in direct communication with Moscow, relying instead on the US as an intermediary. He expressed anticipation of Russia’s official response to the latest proposal in the coming days but voiced skepticism about Moscow’s genuine commitment to halting its military actions. “Russia is always looking for reasons not to agree,” he commented.
As diplomatic efforts continue, the international community watches closely, aware that the outcome of these discussions could significantly impact the trajectory of the conflict in Ukraine.
