UPS Flight 2976 Tragedy Claims 15th Victim on Christmas Day
The crash of UPS Flight 2976 has tragically claimed its fifteenth victim, as Alain Rodriguez Colina passed away on December 25, 2025. Colina, who had been in a medically induced coma since the incident on November 4, suffered severe burns over more than 50% of his body after the aircraft crashed into the scrapyard where he worked near Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport.
Colina was attending to a customer at Grade A Auto Parts & Recycling when the McDonnell Douglas MD-11F crashed into the scrapyard and a nearby semi-truck parking lot. His coworker died in the crash, but Colina managed to escape the initial destruction. Despite initial signs of recovery, his condition deteriorated, leading to his death on Christmas Day.
Details of the Crash
UPS Flight 2976, a scheduled cargo flight from Louisville to Honolulu, was operating on November 4, 2025, when disaster struck shortly after takeoff. The aircraft, registered as N259UP, experienced a catastrophic failure when its number one engine detached from the left wing. This incident ignited a fire that quickly spread, rendering the aircraft uncontrollable.
The flight, which departed at approximately 17:13 local time, was carrying three pilots. All of them were killed alongside twelve individuals on the ground, including Colina. The aircraft banked sharply to the left before crashing into the scrapyard, causing extensive damage and igniting fires in the surrounding area.
The situation is reminiscent of the infamous crash of American Airlines Flight 191 in 1979, which also involved a McDonnell Douglas aircraft. Investigations into that tragedy revealed maintenance failures related to the engine attachment. The current investigation by the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) aims to uncover whether similar issues contributed to the UPS Flight 2976 disaster.
Investigation and Impact
As the NTSB continues its investigation, preliminary findings suggest that UPS Flight 2976 may have experienced additional mechanical failures, potentially involving its number two engine. This theory posits that the aircraft could not gain altitude, leading to the fatal crash.
Colina’s death highlights the profound impact of the incident not only on the victims’ families but also on the local community. His family, which includes relatives in Louisville and a daughter in Cuba, expressed their grief and urged for thorough accountability in the ongoing investigation.
The crash of UPS Flight 2976 has raised significant concerns regarding the safety protocols for aging aircraft like the McDonnell Douglas MD-11F, which was originally delivered in 1991 and converted for cargo service in 2006. Safety advocates are calling for a review of maintenance procedures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
As the NTSB prepares to release its final report, the aviation industry and the public await answers to questions surrounding this heartbreaking event.
