Windsor-Essex Hospitals Urge Visitors to Wear Masks This Season

As respiratory virus season begins, local hospitals in Windsor-Essex are urging visitors to wear masks during their visits. Windsor Regional Hospital recommends that individuals don a hospital-issued mask when they are within two metres of patients. While masking is not mandatory in non-clinical areas, such as lobbies and waiting rooms, it is “highly recommended” in higher risk areas, including the emergency room, cancer centre, and dialysis units. Masks will be available at hospital entrances for those visiting.

The hospital has emphasized the importance of taking precautions, stating, “Influenza, COVID-19, and other respiratory viruses continue to circulate in our community.” Patients and visitors are encouraged to follow public health advice, particularly if they are feeling unwell. Additionally, individuals should consult their family practitioners regarding vaccination status and recommendations.

Staff and Visitor Protocols

From Monday, all staff and volunteers at Windsor Regional Hospital are required to wear masks when in close proximity to patients. In some cases, additional personal protective equipment (PPE) may be necessary, especially during outbreaks. Erie Shores Healthcare in Leamington has implemented similar measures, requiring staff to wear masks near patients. While visitors are advised to wear masks, those exhibiting symptoms are asked to refrain from entering the hospital.

Both hospitals have observed an uptick in influenza cases, prompting these precautionary measures. Officials report a concerning rise in influenza and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) cases, with projections indicating that this trend may continue over the next few weeks.
