Khamenei Calls for Firm Action Against Protesters Amid Unrest

Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, publicly declared on Saturday that “rioters must be put in their place,” following a week of escalating protests across the country. These demonstrations, primarily driven by widespread discontent over the economy, have resulted in at least ten fatalities. Khamenei’s remarks may signal a directive to security forces to adopt a more aggressive stance in suppressing demonstrators.

The protests began amid rising economic frustrations, particularly concerning the rapid devaluation of the Iranian rial. Khamenei’s comments come as tensions heightened following a warning from U.S. President Donald Trump, who stated on Friday that if Iran “violently kills peaceful protesters,” the United States “will come to their rescue.” This statement drew a swift backlash from Iranian officials, who threatened potential retaliatory measures against American troops stationed in the Middle East.

While the current protests are significant, they have not yet reached the intensity of those sparked by the death of Mahsa Amini in police custody in 2022, which ignited nationwide unrest. State television broadcast Khamenei’s speech to an audience in Tehran, where he emphasized the need to distinguish between legitimate grievances and what he termed “rioters.”

Protests Spread Across Iran Amid Economic Hardship

The unrest has spread to over 100 locations across 22 of Iran’s 31 provinces, according to the Human Rights Activists News Agency. Protesters, including students and shopkeepers, are calling for an end to the government’s policies, which they perceive as contributing to their economic hardships. Khamenei stated, “We talk to protesters, the officials must talk to them,” but insisted that “there is no benefit to talking to rioters.”

The Iranian government has long accused foreign powers, including the United States and Israel, of instigating unrest within the country. Khamenei reiterated this narrative, claiming that “a bunch of people incited or hired by the enemy” are exploiting the situation to undermine the Islamic Republic. He did not provide evidence to support these assertions.

The Iranian Revolutionary Guards, which includes the paramilitary Basij force, have a history of responding violently to protests, as seen during the 2009 Green Movement and the recent demonstrations following Amini’s death. The Guards operate under Khamenei’s direct command and are expected to play a pivotal role in any crackdown on dissent.

Violence Escalates as Fatalities Increase

Reports indicate that the violence associated with the protests has escalated, with two deaths occurring overnight from Friday into Saturday. In Qom, a grenade explosion reportedly killed a man whom security officials accused of plotting an attack. The second fatality occurred in Harsin, where a member of the Basij was killed in a knife and gun attack.

The ongoing protests highlight the deepening economic crisis in Iran, exacerbated by geopolitical tensions following a recent conflict with Israel and U.S. airstrikes on Iranian nuclear sites. Despite Iran’s commitment to halting uranium enrichment to facilitate potential negotiations, tangible progress in diplomatic discussions has yet to materialize.

The Eurasia Group has noted that while protests may continue or even expand due to Iran’s dire economic situation, the regime possesses a robust security apparatus capable of quelling dissent without losing control.

As the situation develops, the world watches closely, with many concerned about the potential for further violence and the implications for regional stability.
