DeKalb Library Hosts Free Workshop on Historic Document Transcription
The DeKalb Public Library is set to host a free workshop aimed at educating community members on how to transcribe original documents from the National Archives. This initiative is part of the broader America 250 project, which celebrates the nation’s history and heritage. The workshop will take place on January 11, 2024, at 2 p.m. in the library’s lower-level Zimmerman Meeting Room, located at 309 Oak St.
Participants in the workshop will gain valuable skills in deciphering cursive handwriting and creating keyword tags for historical documents. This hands-on experience will allow attendees to engage directly with the transcription process, enhancing their understanding of archival work. To participate, individuals must create a National Archives login and enable two-factor authentication. The library will provide laptops for use during the session.
Due to space limitations, attendance is on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested individuals are encouraged to arrive early to secure their spot. For more information about the workshop, attendees can contact Emily K. at [email protected] or call 815-756-9568, extension 6106.
This workshop represents a unique opportunity for community members to engage with their country’s historical records and contribute to an important cultural initiative. The America 250 project aims to inspire a deeper connection to the nation’s past while equipping individuals with skills that can be applied in various contexts, including genealogy research and historical preservation.
