The DeKalb Public Library is set to host a workshop aimed at teaching community members how to transcribe historic documents from the National Archives. This event is part of the America 250 initiative, celebrating the nation’s upcoming milestone anniversary. The free workshop will take place on January 11, 2024, at 14:00 in the library’s lower-level Zimmerman Meeting Room, located at 309 Oak St.

Participants will have the opportunity to learn techniques for deciphering cursive handwriting and creating keyword tags for documents. Additionally, the workshop will provide hands-on experience with the transcription process, allowing attendees to engage directly with the materials.

To participate, individuals must create a login for the National Archives, which includes two-factor authentication for security purposes. The library will provide laptops for the workshop, ensuring that all participants have the necessary tools to complete the tasks.

Due to limited space in the meeting room, attendance will be on a first-come, first-served basis. Interested individuals are encouraged to arrive early to secure their spot. For further information, attendees can reach out via email to Emily K. at [email protected] or call 815-756-9568, extension 6106.

This initiative not only promotes engagement with historical documents but also aims to enhance the community’s understanding of the country’s past.
