University of Victoria Launches Mentorship Program for Freshmen
The University of Victoria (UVic) has introduced the First Year Interconnect (FYI) program, a peer-mentorship initiative designed to support incoming undergraduate students as they transition from high school to university life. Launched in October 2023, the program aims to provide every new student with an upper-year mentor, fostering a sense of belonging and community among the diverse student body.
With over 400 upper-year students volunteering within the first month, the FYI program is quickly gaining traction. Mentors and mentees can connect in a variety of ways, including text messaging, in-person meetings, or by attending FYI drop-in events. This flexibility allows students to choose the method that best suits their individual needs and preferences.
“Belonging and social connection are essential for student success,” said Emily Huynh, associate director of student experience, in an interview with Saanich News. She emphasized the challenges faced by first-year students, many of whom come from varying backgrounds, including first-generation and international students. The FYI program offers these newcomers “a point of contact and someone who’s checking in on them” as they navigate the complexities of university life.
The benefits of the FYI program extend beyond the mentees. Mentors also gain valuable leadership experience and opportunities for co-curricular development. According to FYI coordinators Daniel Kaiser and Bhavya Arora, the program not only helps to build community but also boosts confidence among upper-year students as they share insights and lessons learned from their own first-year experiences.
The initiative aligns with UVic’s commitment to enhancing student support services and fostering an inclusive learning environment. By pairing new students with mentors, the university hopes to reduce feelings of isolation and promote academic success during the crucial transition period.
As the program continues to grow, UVic is optimistic about its potential impact on student retention and engagement. The FYI program represents a proactive approach to addressing the challenges faced by first-year students, ultimately contributing to a more connected and supportive university experience.
