University of Victoria Launches Peer Mentorship Program for Freshmen
Starting university can be a daunting experience for students transitioning from high school, particularly during the challenging winter months. In response to this need for support, the University of Victoria (UVic) has introduced the First Year Interconnect (FYI) program. This new peer-mentorship initiative aims to assist incoming undergraduate students by pairing them with upper-year mentors.
Launched in October 2023, the FYI program has quickly gained traction, attracting over 400 upper-year students to volunteer within its first month. The structure of the program allows mentors and mentees to choose their preferred methods of communication, whether through text, in-person meetings, or participation in FYI drop-in events.
Emily Huynh, the associate director of student experience, emphasized the importance of social connections for student success. “Belonging and social connection are essential for student success,” she stated in an interview with Saanich News. The program is designed to support a diverse group of students, including first-generation and international students, all of whom face significant adjustments as they begin their university journeys.
The FYI program aims to provide new students with “a point of contact and someone who’s checking in on them” as they navigate the complexities of university life. This initiative not only supports mentees but also offers valuable leadership experience and co-curricular development for mentors.
Building Community through Mentorship
Coordinators of the FYI program, Daniel Kaiser and Bhavya Arora, highlighted the broader benefits of the initiative. They noted that the program fosters community, enhances confidence, and empowers upper-year students to share insights about what they wish they had known during their first year.
Creating an environment where students feel connected and supported is a priority for UVic, especially as the winter months can often bring feelings of isolation. The FYI program seeks to bridge these gaps by facilitating meaningful interactions and providing a structured support system for new arrivals.
As the program continues to grow, UVic aims to further enhance the experience of its students, ensuring that each individual feels valued and connected throughout their academic journey. The FYI initiative represents a proactive step in addressing the challenges faced by students as they transition into university life, ultimately contributing to their overall success and well-being.
