Red Deerians Embrace Health at 16th Annual Healthy Living Expo
Residents of Red Deer gathered to enhance their knowledge of healthy living at the 16th Annual Healthy Living Expo, held on January 24, 2024, at Westerner Park’s Harvest Centre. The event showcased various local health and wellness resources, attracting participants eager to improve their lifestyles.
Rayna Heinzlmeir, director of the expo, highlighted the event’s purpose. “Today is about every aspect of health and wellness,” she stated. Attendees had the chance to engage with health professionals, fitness trainers, and wellness experts, making it a unique opportunity to explore local resources that can support their health goals.
The timing of the expo is particularly relevant as many people start the new year with resolutions focused on health. “A lot of people come into the new year with certain goals in mind. This gives them the opportunity a couple of weeks later to get some help if they aren’t able to get going on their own,” Heinzlmeir explained.
This year, the expo featured over 90 booths, representing a mix of both returning and new vendors. Heinzlmeir noted, “We’re limited in how much space we have during the expo. We actually have a waiting list, which is really great. The community and business owners really embrace coming to this event.” This enthusiastic participation underscores the expo’s significance in promoting community health.
A highlight of the event was the main stage, where various demonstrations took place, including a headstand competition and a plank challenge. “The stage demos are a fun way for people to see what’s going on as well. We also have a kid zone with an interactive play area,” Heinzlmeir added. Such activities not only entertain but also engage visitors in active participation.
The Healthy Living Expo has evolved significantly since its inception. Heinzlmeir reminisced about the first expo, which occurred in a hotel banquet room with tables instead of booths. “That first one was great — it was packed and informative. But now we have more space for people to showcase what they’re all about,” she noted. The larger venue allows for a more interactive experience, enabling attendees to ask questions and connect with vendors more easily.
“The extra space gives people the opportunity to tuck into someone’s space at the show to ask questions. It’s a really fun vibe,” Heinzlmeir remarked, reflecting on the welcoming atmosphere of the event.
