Steelers Honor Mei, Jordin, and Milosevich at 1975 Awards Night
On December 23, 1975, the Sault Steelers held their annual Awards Night, recognizing the contributions of key community figures including Don Mei, Brad Jordin, and Vern Milosevich. This event celebrates local achievements while highlighting the spirit of community service during the festive season.
The evening also coincided with the ongoing efforts of the Christmas Cheer initiative, which provided assistance to approximately 750 families in need that year. The program included hampers containing essential food items such as turkeys or chickens, as well as toys for children. Thanks to generous donations, the fund managed by The Sault Star collected a total of $11,685.40 to support this cause. Joyce Curry, the Christmas Cheer convener, expressed her gratitude, saying, “Please thank the city for me.”
In addition to the Steelers’ recognition, the community was also buzzing with excitement for upcoming local events. Members of the Sault Theatre Workshop, including Keith Knight, Tony Chapman, Tom Hendrie, and Cheryl Montgomery, were preparing for a production of the classic play, Dracula, promising to bring more cultural engagement to the area.
Reflecting on the history of community support, the Christmas Cheer initiative has roots dating back to previous decades. In 1950, the Sault Star Santa Claus Fund provided assistance to around 200 individuals, primarily children from 57 families, with a fund total of $820.39. Contributions came from various local donors, demonstrating an enduring commitment to helping those in need.
The cultural fabric of the community has also been woven through the annual Christmas concerts held at local schools. In 1925, David Kyle School featured performances from talented students, showcasing the importance of arts and community gatherings during the holiday season.
As the year comes to a close, local events and initiatives like those of the Sault Steelers and Christmas Cheer remind residents of the value of giving back and celebrating together, fostering a strong sense of unity and support within the community.
