Science North in Sudbury has introduced a captivating new exhibit, titled PHEMOMENA, which delves into the intriguing world of illusions. This interactive display will be open to the public until April 30, 2024, showcasing how appearances can be deceiving.

Ashley Larose, CEO of Science North, emphasized the unique, hands-on nature of the exhibit. “It is highly interactive, which we know our visitors love,” she stated. Larose highlighted that PHEMOMENA differs from previous exhibits, aiming to engage visitors both mentally and physically.

The exhibit offers a variety of illusions designed to spark curiosity and enhance the overall visitor experience. “They’re going to get to experience all kinds of different illusions, and we hope that it ignites their curiosity for the rest of their visit at Science North,” Larose added.

Among the numerous illusions is a striking demonstration featuring Larose herself, appearing much larger than a group of smaller guests. This visual representation is just one of the 20 illusions featured in the exhibit, which invites guests to explore the science behind perception.

Bruce Doran, a bluecoat at Science North, explained that the exhibit aims to illustrate how the brain interprets sensory data. “It’s talking about how your perception may be fooled by these different exhibits and explains how that works,” he said.

PHEMOMENA coincides with significant events, including Family Day on February 16 and the upcoming March Break, making it a prime opportunity for families to explore the wonders of science together. Science North anticipates that tens of thousands of visitors will engage with the exhibit during its run.

For those interested in expanding their understanding of how the senses work, PHEMOMENA promises to be a thought-provoking experience. Visitors can expect to learn more about the fascinating interplay between perception and reality while enjoying a fun, interactive environment.
